Not to mention, that trade demolished them. While they made the playoffs, they didn't retain Sabathia, and they lost out on getting draft picks for him walking to the Yankees, who gave up their 1st rounder to the Angels that year after signing Tex. So really, outside of an exciting 2 months and a week, the Sabathia trade accomplished absolutely nothing. Doug Melvin was smarter this time around, and traded for two top of the rotation starters who fit right in, and are controllable past this year. Add that Weeks, Braun and Gallardo are still going to be around, and the Brewers don't look so bad even when they lose Prince after this season. They went into a "win now and later" mode. Their guys are still young and there's a window of opportunity this time around. Couldn't say that in 2008. |
