The key to getting the ratings theyre looking for is not to interest fans like us. Its to attract and keep the attention of of people who never have bought a ppv or dont know much about mma. The type of people that will watch it because of the hype its getting.
Fox is going to be hyping this thing up big time. They have already started with advertisements during breaks of the nfl preseason games. For anyone not in america, and while im sure you know, nfl is the most watched sport in america, and this whole deal is to get this bigger in america. Anyway, it is significantly easier to hype one fight to the general public than it is to hype five of them. It can also serve to be less risky from the standpoint of all it takes is one fight before the main event to really suck for it to kill the viewership for the rest of the night. So they went with a fight that is going to relatively guarantee to deliver outside of a 7 second ko or 25 minutes of noone engaging, which neither fighter has shown they do in the past. They picked two heavyweight fighters that have the skill and fitness of their lighter-weight counterparts, and the power of the strongest of heavyweights. Not to mention each guy has a ton of heart, so it it is very likely that if one of them gets hurt early, they will fight back and not be finished. This one fight is the appetizer to get all these fans that have never seen mma or given it a chance hooked. A full fightcard of fights on a 3 hour card could possibly serve to either lose the attention span of many people or cause them not to tune in until the main event if at all. The fox hype machine is insane. They are going to play this up like its muhammed ali in the 70s. I really think they did the perfect thing here. Not only that, but they are going to ride the coattails of the manny paciao fight which could attract a lot of people who are buying that fight and can tune into another huge fight for free right before it. |
