You wanted him to refuse to become World Heavyweight Champion? Yes, he COULD have done that, but it would have been silly. He could have done what Chavo did (refuse to work the Kerwin White gimmick any longer), but I don't think we have to compare the careers of Mysterio and Chavo right now.

not to mention he was one of Eddie's legit best friends. Pretty sure he was in a better position to decide what was "too much" in regards to Eddie and his family as opposed to some people on the internet.
