The 2011 TPWW Wrestling Forum Awards Results

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FEUD OF THE YEAR

SPOILER: show
3RD PLACE (TIED): Dolph Ziggler vs. Zack Ryder/CM Punk vs. "the Establishment"/WWE (5.7%)

SPOILER: show
2ND PLACE: John Cena vs. CM Punk (31.4%)

SPOILER: show
1ST PLACE: Randy Orton vs. Christian (48.5%)

What started out as a 2 day title reign and the biggest flood of tears to hit the internet since that dude telling people to leave Britney alone, turned into 4 months of excellent matches, inventive booking, segments and promos that saw Randy Orton paired with Christian, giving the latter the rub he needed to ascend to the heights many hoped he would climb for years. The fact he features in 50% of all feuds nominated this year tells you everything you need to know about Randall. On the other hand however, benefiting from as slowburn of a heel turn as you're going to get in WWE in 2011, Christian showed what many have always suspected, that given the opportunity to "play with the big boys" on a consistent basis, that he's more than capable of hanging and what's more, succeeding. Now if only he'd go to the gym a bit more often.

OTHER VOTES RECEIVED: Mark Henry vs. Randy Orton, Awesome Truth vs. Triple H, Randy Orton vs. Wade Barrett.

Not much to be said here that won't be said elsewhere. 2 great ladder matches, a solid but short Christian/Orton WHC title with a great finish followed by a "How to show fire 101" class from Randy Orton and main event that I think at least a couple of people enjoyed.

OTHER VOTES RECEIVED: WWE Extreme Rules, WWE Night of Champions (both 5.7%) WWE SummerSlam, WWE Royal Rumble, WWE WrestleMania XXVII, ROH Best In The World 2011.

TAG TEAM OF THE YEAR

SPOILER: show
3RD PLACE: Beer Money (8.5%)

SPOILER: show
2ND PLACE: Air Boom (20%)

SPOILER: show
1ST PLACE: Awesome Truth (51.4%)

In the year that WWE were apparently trying to revitalize a long dead tag division, it was another team of high-on-the-card-guys-thrown-together that made the biggest impact according to TPWW.net. Whilst only together for a short period of time, make no mistake, Miz and Truth together were an absolute riot, their entrance antics alone being more entertaining than most guys entire act. Initially teasing coming together for a few weeks, the team became official after jumping everybody's favourite squash fodder, Santino Marella. This was followed by high profile matches and angles with the likes of Triple H, CM Punk, John Laurinaitis, even being involved in the closing angles of consecutive PPV's in very prominent spots. This followed by being awarded the spot of facing John Cena and The Rock, in the latter's first match in 7 years, where (unsurprisingly) they stared at the lights. The team were short lived following Truth's wellness suspension but based on recent weeks, it seems there will be at least another month or two of these two interacting on our TV screens. That can't be a bad thing.

OTHER VOTES RECEIVED: Primo & Epico (5.7%) Justin Gabriel & Heath Slater, Laycool, All Night Express & Divas of Doom.

CHARACTER OF THE YEAR

SPOILER: show
3RD PLACE: Zack Ryder (11.4%)

SPOILER: show
2ND PLACE: R-Truth (25.7%)

SPOILER: show
1ST PLACE: CM Punk (28.5%)

From Nexus saviour to Voice of the Voiceless, Punk went from the reliable hand that many thought could be great given the chance to "holy shit, this guy is good" from everybody. Benefiting from a contract renewal at a time when WWE could ill afford to lose him, Punk used that to his advantage to finally show the entire world what he really could do with a non-stop barrage of excellent promos and mannerisms, not once ever seeming out of place or uncomfortable as the focal point of the show. Appearances at Comic Con and Cubs games during episodes of RAW, having a seemingly free reign to say "taboo" things to figures such as Vince McMahon and Triple H and blurring the line between shoot and work led to him becoming a must see part of weekly television for many and the undisputed favourite of the entire interwebs. Does he have everybody's attention now?

OTHER VOTES RECEIVED: Cody Rhodes (8.5%) Kane, James Storm, Bully Ray, Dolph Ziggler, The Miz, Kharma, Christian, The Rock & Mark Henry.

MATCH OF THE YEAR

SPOILER: show
2ND PLACE: Triple H vs. The Undertaker (17.1%)
(No Holds Barred - WRESTLEMANIA XXVII - 3rd April 2011)

SPOILER: show
1ST PLACE: John Cena vs. CM Punk (60%)
(WWE Championship - Money In The Bank - 17th July 2011)

The word "epic" has been bastardized, beaten, strapped down and anally violated by this point in history but if anything in professional wrestling were to be described as "epic" in it's pure and proper form for 2011, it was the build, execution and aftermath of this match. And then some. Featuring the hottest crowd in professional wrestling anywhere since The Rock vs. Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania X8, Cena and Punk absolutely tore the house down for 33 minutes and 44 glorious seconds en route to the most popular decision and title change in many, many years. Go and watch the anticipation for and eventual reaction to Punk's entrance and turn the volume wayyy up. I dare you to not get goosebumps. This was everything that is truly great about professional wrestling and for at least one night, CM Punk stood alone as by far the biggest entity in the entire industry.

OTHER VOTES RECEIVED: Motor City Machine Guns vs. Beer Money (TNA Genesis) Randy Orton vs. Mark Henry (Night of Champions) John Cena vs. CM Punk (SummerSlam) Cody Rhodes vs. Rey Mysterio (WrestleMania XXVII) Christian vs. Alberto Del Rio (Extreme Rules) CM Punk vs. The Miz vs. Alberto Del Rio (TLC) John Cena vs. The Miz (WrestleMania XXVII) Davey Richards vs. Christopher Daniels (ROH Manhattan Mayhem IV)

WORST WRESTLER OF THE YEAR

SPOILER: show
2ND PLACE (TIED): Mason Ryan & David Otunga (8.5%)

SPOILER: show
1ST PLACE: Ezekiel Jackson (17.1%)

By far the most narrow and diversely voted for category but it's Ezekiel Jackson that comes out on...top? Big Zeke likes his bodyslams. And he has a wrinkly head. Kind of has problems stringing a sentence together. Huge arms. Remember when he was with The Brian Kendrick and he'd read books and stuff? Beat Wade Barrett clean on PPV. Seems like a very nice guy "in real life". About all I have to say about Ezekiel Jackson.

OTHER VOTES RECEIVED: Santino Marella, Alicia Fox, Kelly Kelly, Great Khali, Sin Cara, Daniel Bryan (all 5.7%) Big Show, Christian, John Morrison, Michael Cole, Tyler Reks, Vladimir Kozlov, Eve, Alex Riley, Anarquia.

RISE OF THE YEAR

SPOILER: show
3RD PLACE: Dolph Ziggler (14.2%)

SPOILER: show
2ND PLACE: Cody Rhodes (17.1%)

SPOILER: show
1ST PLACE: Zack Ryder (31.4%)

If professional wrestling ever had a Cinderella story, it may have come along this year. Beginning 2011 nowhere to be seen or heard, Zack Ryder was that guy who used to run around with Edge but now was wearing those half tight, half trunk gimmicks that a few people liked. Then on February 17th 2011, the Ryder Revolution began. With no way of getting himself out there otherwise, Z True Long Island Story debuted on Youtube to literally 10's of people, an assortment of inside jokes, commentaries and humourous skits designed to get people to pay attention. And it didn't take long, viewing numbers started to grow along with the comment section and week by week a gradual increase of signs and chants popping up amongst WWE audiences beckoning for the Long Island native. It didn't take long for the brass to notice along with the likes of Triple H and John Cena. Incorporating parts of the show into his TV character and vice versa, Ryder became one of the bona fide most over guys on the entire roster and is currently experiencing a run like nothing he's ever experienced before, culminating with a US title win over Dolph Ziggler in the Garden at Survivor Series to possibly the loudest ovation of the entire PPV. Whether he continues to ride the wave of momentum to bigger and better things remains to be seen, evolution is crucial in professional wrestling. But 2011 is by far and away the greatest thing to happen so far to the Long Island Iced Z. It'll be interesting to see where he goes from here.

OTHER VOTES RECEIVED: Mark Henry (11.4%) The Miz, CM Punk, Wade Barrett (all 5.7%) Alberto Del Rio, R-Truth

SPOILER: show
1ST PLACE: Sting vs. Jeff Hardy (31.4%)
(TNA World Heavyweight Championship - TNA VICTORY ROAD - 13th March 2011)

TNA wins an award!!! Oh actually...

The time it has taken you to unveil the runner up and third placed matches as well as the opening "sentence" is probably roughly the same amount of time this match lasted. On March 13th of last year, TNA had a PPV with a main event of Jeff Hardy vs. Sting scheduled for their top title. Jeff naturally thought this would be the perfect time to engage in a spot of recreational drug use and proceeded to waltz off into lala land to chase a few flying rabbits. Incredulously, TNA allowed the match to take place, only instead of adding a 3rd man or switching out Hardy or placing another match as the main or having Velvet Sky pole dance for 15 minutes or doing ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING ELSE, they went ahead and booked a quick finish in just 1:28 for their World title match. On PPV. That people had actually spent money to see. And they wonder why people laugh at the sound of those three letters. Where Wrestling Matters ladies and gentleman. It was still better than most diva matches this year tho.

Was there ever any doubt as to where this would go? Status at Titan Towers approached his status on the internet with every passing day as 2011 went on, dramatically blowing up as rather opportunistically stated by some as "the biggest thing since Steve Austin". This coming off the back of his so-called "pipebombs" mentioning everything from Vince McMahon being a bully to Ring of Honor and the "will he stay, will he go?" saga which made WWE television for a few weeks over the summer completely unmissable. Multiple stellar matches with the likes of John Cena, Randy Orton and Rey Mysterio were merely the icing on the cake. Appears to have cemented his spot in the main event after dropping in and out for a couple of years. With WWE in need of solid headliners more than ever, it'll be interesting to see how Punk carries his remaining momentum into 2012.

OTHER VOTES RECEIVED: Edge, The Miz, Triple H, The Rock

(WWE MONEY IN THE BANK - 17th July 2011)

Watch it here (other parts are linked at the end of part 1)

So many moments over the space of about 45 minutes one night back in July. The votes for individual parts were overwhelming, be it the entrance, Punk winning the belt, the blowing of the kiss to Vincent Kennedy McMahon before leaving with the same belt (well, not the exact same belt but you get what I mean) that was once held by Hulk Hogan, Bruno Sammartino, Ric Flair and so forth to never return again (or at least a couple of weeks) So they've all just been grouped into one and celebrated as one longgggg moment. As previously mentioned, this was professional wrestling at it's absolute finest. Go and watch it again right now. Go. Go go. Go.

OTHER VOTES RECEIVED: The Rock Returns (8.5%) Diesel enters the Royal Rumble (5.7%) Mark Henry wins the World Heavyweight title after 15 years, Zack Ryder wins US Title in New York, CM Punk, Zack Ryder and Daniel Bryan open RAW with respective titles, Daniel Bryan and Zack Ryder in RAW main event.
