That is not true..

Once they get to the level of "mainstream pop" then everyone knows about them.. I don't listen to Taylor Swift, but it doesn't mean I don't recognize her songs when I hear them..

Tupac, at that point, was pop.. His videos were on Mtv and the album in question was like number 9 as far as record sales in 1996..

You don't have to "follow" a certain type of music to know who mainstream acts are..

I know who she is by name but if you played 10 random songs from the past 2 years that have female vocals with electro pop music in the backround I would have a hard time pointing her out.

It depends on how popular they are and Taylor is or was popular but she's not that popular. She'll probably be a nobody in a few years or just have a few dedicated left over post-tweens that like her while she hangs on to her 15 minutes of fame by a thread.
