It's the perfect way to take a bland guy and make him seem a little bit more interesting. Not sure why Yoshi Tatsu dropped the facepaint gimmick, he was looking pretty good for two weeks on NXT there.

On the indy circuit, there are the Kobalds in ROH, who are quasi-Mayan characters painted like Damian / Halloween 666, and "Dark Child" Chasyn Rance in various indies, who is painted like "Anti-Christ of Wrestling" Jeff Hardy. Until 2007, "Pogo the Clown" Joe Apfelbaum also wrestled.

I suppose having a family-friendly face-painted character, such as face Doink, would be more unusual.
