They were really bleeding money to the point even if the AOL-Time Warner merger never occurred, WCW would have been lucky to last another few years.

Honestly even if Bischoff and his group had succeeded in buying WCW they probably would have been out within 5 years because Bischoff could never successfully book anything that didn't rely on the novelty popularity of established stars, which at that point was yesterday's news.

WCW only made 3 stars (Goldberg, DDP, and Booker T) and they blew it with all of them. They killed Golberg, they waited too long on DDP, and it was too little too late by the time Booker T got the push.

Yeah but I never would have imagined Steiner would have reached that level so late into his career. It seemed like he was just an amazing tag guy like the Road Warriors. As much as I fault WCW they did book Scott Steiner to be a monster heel and did it well. He was soooooo bad ass and that's what makes his WWE run disappointing.

First off, Bret is 55 years old. Even if his career didn't get suddenly ended, I highly doubt he'd still be a regular wrestler at this point. Not everybody is Flair and wants to work into their 60's and beyond.

Beyond that though, others have summed it up. WCW was already way into its downturn when Bret got injured. A lot say the slide started right after Starrcade 1997...I personally subscribe to the Finger Poke of Doom really being what started WCW's slide. Nash ending Goldberg's streak was fine, but to have him simply lay down for Hogan and give him the belt pretty much pissed away the entire streak angle.

nothing could save wcw.

If wcw was NOT losing money and was still doing fine in the ratings it would have got shelved anyway. Pro wrestling was not what AOL wanted to be associated with.

Remember wcw was losing money for decades prior but yet it was kept around because of Ted Turner.

No wrestler, angle or ppv could have kep wcw from dying.
