Because...
A] We in Canada want to see the pure Super Bowl broadcast. B] we DON'T want to see Canadian TV channels doing a stupid live-edited 'chop job' of U.S. TV shows. C] We DON'T want Canada's major cable and satellite providers directly making money off any TV show created outside our borders. D] We DON'T want to hear or see CTV plugging it's primetime lineup that has no shows made in Canada on it. It's called subsidized corporate welfare by Bell Canada Enterprises to be doing this shit. E] We DON'T like Canadian advertising firms creating bids to profit off U.S. TV. And F] We DON'T like hearing Canadian commercial voice-over artists doing a bad job reading off the copy of American commercial voice-over artists original ad work, for ads that are seen in both countries. For those that may not know, Bell Canada Enterprises, Rogers Communications, Corus Entertainment, Shaw Communications, and a few other companies, stopped investing in making original Canadian TV shows a long time ago, and chose to make all of their operating budgets 'simsubbing' U.S. TV shows.(The only exemption here is the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, or CBC, who don't rely on binging on U.S. TV shows to bloat their ad revenue artifically) Bell, last year, made $750 Million in ad revenue off American programming, that they, frankly, have no right to bid on airing. I dunno about the rest, but for a country like Canada, that figure makes me think that that amount of money is WAY too much for any Canadian telco business to make off that revenue stream. If I had a hand in this issue, I'd be... A] Pulling the operating licenses for Bell, Rogers, Corus, and Shaw for bidding on U.S. media rights, and shutting those companies down, while having their entire corporate executive boards arrested for obstruction of open broadcast and broadband networks, and interference to stop them from existing... B] Dissolving the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission, and firing it's entire staff, for being made up of former employees of Bell, Rogers, et al... C] Issuing a government order mandating that all decisions on Canadian telecommunications would come directly from the federal government, and not a body made up of former telco execs... D] Forming new companies to manage only domestic TV shows, and telling them to offer the entire library of privately-made Canadian TV in a VOD business model, then privatizing them under new management that would not bid on TV rights outside Canadian borders... E] Allowing U.S and International TV channels to come to Canada with no Canadian advertising restrictions placed on them... F] Forcing all local Canadian TV channels owned by private companies(CBC exempt) to go to 21-hour news schedules, with them only airing a prime-time entertainment schedule from 8-11PM local time... G] Forcing TSN and Sportsnet to air sports programming only with Canadian pro sports franchises involved... H] Ordering that all Canadian cable and satellite bills be dropped by 60% of current prices... And I] Beginning discussions with the FCC in the U.S. to unify the Canadian and American telco industries together, where both countries benefitted from the partnership on an equal basis. And if anyone in Canada didn't like any of this? Well, they could kick rocks, because I'd only be interested in making sure that NO Canadian telco directly controlled A] the industry, and B] it's regulatory body, ever again. There's WAY too much naivete among those who consume TV in Canada, and that has to stop. |
