There is nothing to talk about.
It wasn't just due to the marketing. When the 16 bit era was in full swing, Nintendo completely solidified itself as "family friendly/for the kids", so while they were busy launching awesome and theoretically superior games on paper, Sega was happy to launch the "darker" stuff and, of course, the blood-laden port of Mortal Kombat. Disposable income coupled with 90's teen angst was a cash cow the big N rarely milked.

They did it to themselves. And that's what really hurts.
