You can definitely see a pattern that the writers seemingly get bored of certain guys or are directed to "bury" them (Sandow, for example) and just before that happens they give the top guy a win over them whilst they're still of some value.

Sandow didn't plummet because he lost to Cena, he lost to Cena because he was about to plummet.
