ESPN Boston seems to think Stevan Ridley won't even make the 53-man roster.

Richie Incognito going for a tryout with the Bucs. Ridiculous that he's still unsigned. As if he's the only mean person in the NFL.

Never really cared for Richie Incognito. Nothing really to do with this whole bullying thing, but I watched him a couple of times with the Rams, and he really seemed like a less than medicore player..then he tried to hit some dude with his helmet. I mean I know the Bills and Dolphins struggled for depth and talent while he was there, but he never struck me as someone worth the hassle he always brings.

Yeah he's kind of a shitbag, but he's graded out positively the past few seasons and definitely would help out teams that are hurting on the line

I'm 99% confident that 1 of the NFC Wild Cards is from the west but it'd be very hard for two.

@Vito, Giants traded some kicker (Brandon McManus) to Broncos for a conditional 7th

That's pretty sweet. McManus looked really good in preseason but there was no way in hell Coughlin was going to turn the kicking job over to a rookie unless Josh Brown had an awful preseason, which he didn't. So the Giants basically got something for a guy who was gonna otherwise be cut.

So apparently the condition in the conditional 7th rounder the Broncos gave the Giants for McManus is that the Giants only get the pick if McManus is on Denver's roster after week 5. Seeing as that's when Prater returns from suspension, they almost certainly will release McManus after 4 games and not give up anything.
That makes sense really. Teams are increasingly reluctant to trade draft picks for good players, so a draft pick for an undrafted kicker seemed a bit odd. |

Ahh yeah that makes sense, still though if Prater has a setback and McManus is kicking well enough, they could keep him around an extra couple weeks if necessary. Doubtful, but if there's no attractive FAs... who knows.
Really can't lose either way I guess I always thought the terms "condition _th round pick" meant, say in this case it was a 7th that could escalate, but makes sense this way too |

Yeah basically the only way the Broncos wouldn't bring Prater back week 5 is if he gets hurt or something.
Supposedly the Eagles were going to claim McManus cause they've had kicking issues in preseason, so the Giants were really just playing keep-away. Smart. |

It's okay, Johnny Football will go through his growing pains this year and be an NFL-caliber QB for Gordon next season. Browns will be unstoppable.

I've yet to make any 'official' (i.e. financially-backed) predictions yet but those look pretty good. I still think the NFC East is a crapshoot though.
Any particular reason you're down on the 49ers this year? |

Gordon wants to play in the CFL this year, but CFL rules don't allow players under NFL contract to play. The Browns would have to cut him in order for this to happen, which is not gonna happen.

Actually that's the reason I'm going into the season with tempered expectations. Except for one drive the Giants offense has looked lost. I do think they'll finally hit their stride a few weeks into the season, but the easiest part of their schedule is early on. Hoping they don't give away games they should win since the second half will be brutal. |

Also I really wish Coughlin would sit his starters tonight. He said they'll get 15-18 snaps. Why bother? It's not enough of a sample size to mean anything and it's just risking injury. They can't afford anyone else getting hurt.

Basing anything off the preseason is a very poor way to evaluate things. It literally means nothing. Even if the starters are playing deep into games (3rd/4th week), the coaches are playing things close to the vest to not give away schemes etc. I just don't see how the 49ers, arguably a better team than Seattle even last year, are being disregarded because of a couple of dress rehearsals.

Yeah it's crazy. The Niners will be very good. I thought long and hard about making them my NFC rep for the Super Bowl, actually. Wouldn't surprise me at all.

I'll throw my quick predictions in:
AFC East Patriots Jets Dolphins Bills AFC North Ravens Steelers (Wild Card 2) Bengals Browns AFC South Colts Texans Titans Jaguars AFC West Broncos Chargers (Wild Card 1) Chiefs Raiders Pats, Colts, and Broncos would all seem to be safe bets. I think the AFC North will be strong, the Ravens just barely missed out last year. I see 2 teams emerging from that division. Despite having them missing the playoffs I don't think the Bengals will be awful, but every year a team everybody thinks will be really good ends up being a bit worse than expected and for some reason I think it'll be them. It might be my total lack of faith in Andy Dalton. Honorable mention: seriously considered the Jets for the 2nd WC, I think they'll actually be pretty good. I like their defense and think Chris Johnson will be a nice boost to their offense. NFC East Eagles Giants Cowboys Redskins NFC North Packers Bears (Wild Card 2) Lions Vikings NFC South Saints Falcons Panthers Buccaneers NFC West Seahawks 49ers (Wild Card 1) Cardinals Rams The East is wide open, any team can win. Just went with the Eagles since they're the "known" commodity but if they fell apart it wouldn't surprise me. The North should be tight, the Lions are impossible to forecast. Locked in on the Saints for the South, Panthers will come back down to Earth. Only have the Cardinals not getting the 2nd Wild Card because the division will beat the shit out of each other all year. Despite the brutal schedule Seahawks should get 6 or 7 home wins before even looking at the road games, so that pushes them to the top of the division. Super Bowl: Seahawks over Colts. I don't think I've ever predicted a repeat winner before, it's not easy to do. But if they get homefield through the playoffs it'll be a huge boost for them...and they just have insane depth. |

NFL passes new punishment rules for domestic abuse cases. 1st offense is a 6 game suspension while a second offense is a lifetime ban.
Making things interesting is the new rules allow the 1st penalty to be longer if the player has any past history with domestic abuse, hits a pregnant woman, or does it in front of a child. Players can also request for reinstatement after a year for the second offense but NFL hinted its not going to work. |

Peyton Manning fined $8,268 for yelling at DJ Swearinger in the last preseason game.
1) That's an oddly specific number. 2) Good. It was a perfectly clean hit and that Welker got concussed is pretty much 100% on Peyton anyway. I've never seen a QB throw down the middle into heavy traffic more than him. Austin Collie says hello. |
