Computer Slowdown

For some reason, my computer has been slowing down a lot lately and I'm pissed because I can't find the problem. I've uninstalled countless programs and checked to see what programs are running, but everything seems to be okay. After about 5 minutes of use, the computer becomes really busy for whatever reason, even if there are no programs running.

Also, sometimes the computer pops up with an error message saying that my virtual memory is too low and I have no clue what it means.

I'm thinking I should just reformat and start all over, but I only want to use that as a last resort. Anyone has an idea that could help me?

Check for viruses and spyware. Check the Windows Task Manager to see what programs are running( and as a result taking up alot of memory).

try doing a defrag on your computer and see if that helps at all. Check for errors as well, i really dunno what else you could try :\
