The problem comes from WWE doing nothing with said rub.

Remember when The Ascension were doing the whole "better than they really are" angle, boasting against former tag teams, which ended up leading them (with a clumsy build, mind you) to a victory over the New Age Outlaws in a manner similar to when Gunn and Dogg themselves got their career boosting rub from LoD?

Difference was, Konnor and Viktor were subsequently dropped from the face of the earth, only to recently re-appear (relevance wise) as Cody's acolytes. It's not like they were being groomed for world title, company carrying status as singles competitors, they could have eaily been slow built to live up to their own "hype", instead, much like most talent that has graced the ring in the last decade or so, they go into "we're bored now" mode and drop them from RAW and give jobber entrances/matches on Smackdown.

They make Jericho look less impressive when he loses to a guy who's punished for reporting his own injury and completely dropped from TV instead of losing to a guy who cuts promos and carries an angle with it until he's cleared to compete again.

Sting losing last night is fine... unless they just sweep it under the rug and pretend him vs Seth never happened for whatever reason, then just inexplicably drop him from main event status to go fuck off in midcard matches with no Authority blowoff or somesuch. Then, who gained anything?

For every Rock vs Cena or Lesnar vs Undertaker, where nobody really gets hurt from the outcomes, they too often try to use a "Legend" (as it were) to try to make a star seemingly overnight, and if the crowd doesn't unanimously rally behind the young lion within the span of a week, well, then, the whole thing gets scrapped.
