You can tell right away if the memory is bad though. If your machine has a POST screen that shows the RAM before Windows, it should match what you have in the board.

If not, your machine will either not boot at all or will be slow as fook because of only X of Y sticks working.

Nah, you can have individual corrupt chips so the computer will see all your RAM, but BSOD now and again. SOURCE: Happened to me
