DISCUSSION - Would you like to see Boxing become an NCAA/high school sport?

DISCUSSION - Would you like to see Boxing become an NCAA/high school sport?

I've always wondered about this:

Why can't boxing be a high school and NCAA sport? There are obviously advantages and disadvantages to this, but here is what I think.

Advantages:

-provides more of an opportunity for kids (poor kids?) to get an athletic scholarship to a university. Why fight on the streets when you can box in the ring and get an education?

-Profits. Football at the highschool and collegiate levels have always drawn 'big'. Would boxing be the same?

Disadvantages

-Promotes violence (although one can argue that sports like Football and Rugby do the same).

-Too much potential for head injuries can ruin someone's academic career. So let's say a kid gets a boxing scholarship, but then gets a head injury. This could affect his academic career. Yes - the same can be said for football, etc., but still.

-Will school violence actually INCREASE? If two guys fight (in a boxing ring) in school/college, could this rivalry extend to outside of the ring?

Me personally? - I wouldn't mind seeing Boxing become a highschool/college sport. I like the potential opportunity that it provides for a lot of lower class kids.....who are LOOKING for any opportunity. Obviously - this wouldn't be JUST for lower class kids. Anyone who's interested can partake in it.

Quite a few guys from my High School were in boxing leagues and such. I don't think it really needs to be an official H.S. or College sport. The only way it would make sense to me is if there was an option to be drafted into the pros after college, which there isn't in boxing. That statement doesn't even make sense when applied to boxing.

Then again, I think college wrestling is a great thing to have. Boxing isn't too far off the concept. Ok, I'm changing my mind in mid argument. I think they should go for it

i don't think it's a good idea at the high school level cause kids are still developing/growing and stuff. i don't even think it would draw that well either i mean team sports are one thing cause it involves more people but how well does amatuer wresling draw? college maybe if there's interest in it. i'm not opposed to it if that's what people want to do.

Our H.S. and college wrestling events were always packed. However, I see you point. I don't think boxing would have much of an audience at that level unless it was televised, which it wouldn't be.

I think it could work, but not many schools could afford it I bet. Also you have to remember if they added a Boxing as a male sport they would have to add another female sport to keep it balanced because of Title IX, or offer female boxing I guess. Either way it would be hard to fund at the high school level I would assume seeing how a lot of schools are cutting back on athletics anyways

They did have high school boxing a long time ago. My dad was a boxer when he was 15. I personally think it would be a good idea for college moreso than high school because kids are still immature in high school and might not grasp the concept of letting it go after losing a fight to someone else.

Bad, bad idea. It is probably one of the most draining sports, but I also think it is pretty damn stupid.

I think the insurance would prohibit it... I'm sure the insurance the school would need to carry would be too much.

I wouldn't mind it at a college level, but not HS, kids are still growing, chance of a miss-match and such...

on a side note, while big time college football is a big draw, most programs don't make money, the loss is accepted because if the team does well, more people know about and may choose the school, plus former students or "boosters" will donate money, but college football on itself is a money losing program, hence when they passed title-9, instead most schools adding womans sports, they cut other mens sports and left football alone.

Kill yourself, I box! Boxing is an incredibly difficult sport.

Even though I box, I still say no. Putting one of the most Crooked sports together with the crooked NCAA is not a good idea.

And not every kids who boxes is some kid off the street. You can say that about any sport.

Yeah boxing drains you. I also agree with Supreme's point, there would be guys who wouldn't like getting beat by so and so and go off and do something stupid.

I don't think it's a good idea at the high school level at all, because most of the high schoolers are kids and pretty immature. College maybe.
