Cheap slashers have never been real horror though. That's why they get called slashers and the only people who are frightened by them have never seen the film, just the VHS cover.

Horror doesn't have to be scary, as scary is subjective.
Horror just has to have horror elements, be it serial killers, body horror, gothic horror, slasher, supernatural, occult, fantasy, etc.

I don't think that's correct at all or we'd consider "Scary Movie" a horror film rather than a mediocre parody.

I suppose that's the danger of trying to see films as genre-specific. On the one hand you can get classics like Silence Of The Lambs and Get Out, on the other you can have pretty much every VHS video nasty from the 80's...they can't all be the same thing but they will all appear on similar lists.
