The British horror on Netflix? I thought it was excellent even if it turns into something else entirely by the end. I love British psychological horrors involving expeditions into the woods or camping.
It's a whole genre now and Britain seems to have the market on it.

I watched "Widows" last night and while it really does deserve a full review, all I came to say is that Viola Davis and Daniel Kaluuya are two of the most entertaining and realistic actors nowadays and I am envious of their talent.
Viola Davis is at the top of her game constantly now. She's breathtaking.

I think people tend to see this as the weakest of the three films, presumably because it does not tap into some form of wistful romanticism like the others, but I think both Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy give their strongest performances of the series in this film.

That movie is good, but utterly ridiculous. There is also a scene where Colin Farrel and his red head fine piece of twat campaign helper get in the car and have a conversation. But there is no film of them talking. It's just a long scene of a car driving. And i think Colin Farrell asks here if she's ever been with a black guy. And the whole fucking scene makes no sense and feels like it doesnt belong.

Joaquin Phoenix deserves an Oscar nom.

This movie is about mental health & why it's so important. Superb sound, production design & cinematography. This is a different Gotham than you've seen. The last 30 minutes of the film are completely nuts and iconic cinema.

very good. Heavily influenced by taxi driver. Which isnt to say it doesnt have some of its own ideas. It does. And its engaing throughout. Worth a watch. Phillips best work in this film as a director is getting out of Pheonix's way. Leaving the camera on him for long takes and just letting him work.

Watching "Jodorowsky's Dune" again, one of the more revealing film documentaries ever made, especially since it is about a film that never was made.

Never Grow Old - 3.5/4

A bad tempered independent Western full of ugliness and mean spirit that ends with one of the most simply written and beautifully played emotional exchanges I have ever seen. Don't confuse this with a revenge thriller, it has all of the key components but this is a morality tale all the way. A redemption film. The protagonist is a good but conflicted and put upon man who must overcome his reticence to come good in the end.
Emile Hirsch at his finest is unquestionably one of the best actors in the world, and here he is as good as I have ever seen him. He has John Cusack to play off, a John Cusack that in small films has become so much more than the awful leading man that somehow dominated the quirkier mainstream films of the 90's.
I like Cusack a lot in this. He has the look of an old school heel wrestler in the best way possible. I don't know what on earth they did to his face but his eyes look mental and his skin has the pallor of death.
He reins his acting in appropriately too, only showing mania in glimpses as his cohorts in the movie provide plenty of camp themselves.

I have to say I wasn't expecting a masterpiece but this came very close, the plot is typical Western fare in that a town has changed from good to bad and now it is about to descend into hell with the arrival of some even more heinous strangers. It's nothing new but it is expertly paced in the act progression. There isn't much fat on this, it is a lean and mean piece of film making where you can see that the money has been put in all of the right places proving yet again that practical special effects are always worth using in the right hands.

Great performances across the cast, excellent use of material and surroundings and quite possibly the first appropriate non-comedic use of a blunderbuss in film history.

Joker-9/10

I got what I expected and more. This movie does not try to promote, glorify or justify a triggered individual with mental health issues going over the edge. It is a dark, grim, hopeless and brutal 2 hour film about a man with a start to life so tragic, you realize he never had any real chance to be more than what he is.

The opening scene sets the tone for the film, and it's unforgiving from there. The first time we see Arthur jumped, you do feel a sense of pity for him. He's clearly mentally challenged and not an inherently bad man. When Arthur gets a taste of his first kill, you can see the gears in his head start to wind. The character goes from being pitiful and, to a point, sympathetic, to a slow decent into madness after seeing that his first murder is what makes him feel noticed.

The descent into madness is not immediate however. He does not go on some murderous spree immediately after. Instead, the film takes its time, setting up several series of events that both are a revelation to the viewer and to Arthur himself, the final one being the tipping point.

Arthur learns of true past. At least as true as the film would allow, and that, as the 3rd act begins, is the final step in Arthur embracing and becoming the Joker. He becomes unhinged, but calculating. His actions are not without merit, from his pov, and they are not senseless in that the kills relate to the story that came before them.


In the end, I walked out having enjoyed the movie. But it is not a fun movie. It is a contrast to the Dark Knight, where a hero sacrifices himself to take the fall for the betterment of his city, and in doing so, instills hope in the future of Gotham. Joker instead only promises a bleak, grim era of the city that, given the theme of the oppressed uprising, is only going to get worse.

Joaquin Phoenix is magnetic. Like any small scale Phoenix film, he's virtually in every single scene, and he owns every frame. The character's progression to several bad days, feeling depressed and hopeless, to embracing and relishing in the Joker persona, is top notch work from him. I would hope he gets an Oscar nod.

The Fast and The Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw - 8/10

A delightful romp of over the top action. Turn off your brain and enjoy. I did feel like the Hobbs/Shaw interactions/bickering was a bit much at time and kept expecting them to kiss. Would have bumped it up to a 9

El Chicano-5/10

Story of a police officer who discovers his brother, once thought to have taken his own life, was actually murdered while attempting to take up the mantle of El Chicano, a masked vigilante who took down bad guys in the ghetto of East L.A..

Was initially intrigued by the movie because it's a primarily Latino cast, and a Hispanic superhero seemed cool. The villain had an interesting premise. A Mexican national gang kingpin who wants to infiltrate L.A. and take back the entire state as property of Mexico.

That's where the intrigue dies, unfortunately. The premise of the movie is all its got. The execution was poor. Other than a great fight scene that intros the title character, and another good scene in the final showdown, the movie lacks any depth or heft.

It tries for a police procedural to set up the key pieces, but that's rushed thru to get the main character Diego into the mask. His discoveries of his brother and the ties to the Mexican mafia are convenient at best. There's no slow burn, no build up, no emotional connection to get behind the character.

And the lead? What a bore. He was not charismatic at all. Stiff, uninspired line reading didn't help a bad script that was trying it's damndest to mix English and Spanish in, but instead of making it smooth and seamless, like Narcos, it es clunky, forced, and frankly, off putting.

The real bummer is George Lopez plays it serious as a police chief, and is prob the best performance in the film. But we get so little time with him that it feels wasted. This movie needed to be longer and the ideas and theories needed to be more fleshed out. Instead we just get a violent mess that skips over what makes it interesting to showcase gruesome deaths and a showdown/finale so underwhelming I didn't think it could be the end.

Bummer.

Joker 8.5/10 - Really enjoyed it.... was kind of "uncomfortable" to watch, but in a good way....


El Camino 7/10 - Was alright I guess, but completely unnecessary and didn't really "add anything". Almost prefer just not knowing what happens to Jesse after the finale and leaving that open-ended.
