i wonder how closely it follows the source material. walking has large divergence...

It follows it almost exactly. Many scenes are taken straight from the book, dialogue and all. Only divergences are that the machine head, Mars aliens, and cyborg monster story's happen after the invincible vs omni man fight. And there's a story before said fight that we haven't got in the show yet.
