I know you’re saying that facetiously, but they honestly don’t always help.

I know plenty of people who had to stop going to shows because they couldn’t stand being around modern fans.

It doesn’t help that they have the reputation with advertisers as being undesirable, and they will get booted for almost anything else. Yes, AEW is getting killed in its time slot because it sucks. But that is slot they reserved for themselves.

People don’t want to look out into crowds and see a bunch of people they don’t want to be. That’s why I’ve been critical of the idea that crowds coming back is going to fix all of AEW’s problems. We all know it goes deeper than that.

I remember we used to cover the local rassling fed here and the crowd was full of the biggest collection of mangy mouth-breathing yokels I had ever seen....

Friend asked if I wanted to go to one of the shows we weren't taping and I was just like ".... No thanks". Not because the shows and rasslers weren't entertaining enough, but because I didn't want to be associated as part of that crowd.

How others look doesn’t impact the reality of the situation we’re talking about. Wrestling fans are generally looked down upon. Deal with it. Some people might help that image, but a lot don’t. I’ve personally never had an issue with my appearance, but it wouldn’t matter if I did. Kind of besides the point.

A lot of Cornette fans actually flock to him because he reflects what they think, not vice versa. Otherwise they would just parrot what anyone thinks. You’ll a lot of them will actually beat Corny to the punch. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve learnt a lot from listening to him, but I’m mainly a fan because he talks COMMON FUCKING SENSE tinged with that wisdom and sharpened knowledge.

My mom was randomly telling me a story about how her coworker went to the WWE when they were in town (years ago now). The two complains from her friend were that the show was “boring now” and that the people who went were “losers.” This was from a middle-aged woman and her family lol.

I know lots of families who have just quit going. Not because there isn’t interest there, but because they don’t want to be around fans trying to hijack it (they don’t say it like that, but that’s how we know it). I know women who think the wrestlers are hot, but the guys are absolutely not. One flat-out told me she would have an anxiety attack if she was around so many thirsty blokes.

There’s nothing wrong with being a nerd, or a geek, or enjoying your fandom — don’t get me wrong. I’m obviously nerdy as fuck about my wrestling. But it doesn’t mean it’s a desirable trait, nor that wrestling fans are all cool people. Or perceived as cool people, even if they are.

A big problem wrestling has (its biggest being that kayfabe is gone making it hard to build stars), is that the general audience has been run away (probably because of that), and you’re left with a niche audience that wants to gate-keep. That makes it harder for people to get into wrestling, even if they want to. It’s not “for” them anymore. It’s for people who think about its ironic presentation ironically. It’s so bad it’s good that it’s actually great for them. Cool. Most people are not going to engage with that, even for a passing moment.

Wrestling twitter is a bizarre place...there are some really good/entertaining/smart people on it but there's a lot of really weird fans, both for WWE and AEW. They only see the world from their bubble of being a huge WWE/AEW fanatic. It's their entire life.

I remember going to an NWA Wildside event at a bar and no one could even get on the second rope because the ring was like 2 feet from the ceiling.

There was one guy on the whole show who looked like a legit wrestler. Everyone else looked indistinguishable from the audience members.

I remember the Dynamite on Jericho's cruise, and it was a hard hit bunch.

That's not me trying to be mean, but it was like they all convinced themselves that it was the coolest party ever, and everybody not there was jealous.

Nobody there noticed the fan with B.O. who spits when they talk, and obnoxiously tries to start chants, because it was a whole cruise full of them.
