This is a really simple little creative switch that could mean so much for the company. The idea of getting heat on a babyface in their hometown works in theory, but it just creates a dank atmosphere for crowds in 2021 (and has for ages). Way more conducive to better ticket sales in the future and crowd energy to have local guys win, pop them and give them someone to follow.
WWE has got such a huge roster, that it’s basically a guarantee they can have a hometown face win in almost every single city they’re in. Not that they should do this every week on TV, but you’ve also got Main Event, dark matches, house shows, etc. There’s nothing wrong with a guy from Dallas, even a lower-card guy, teaming up with Big E, Randy Orton, Matt Riddle, etc. to send the fans home happy. So that doesn’t become patterned, you can have the occasional close shave for a hometown guy elsewhere on the card. You can use a local jobber for a heel to squash. You can also embarrass hometown heels from time-to-time, provided they are smart enough to work the crowd into rooting against that heel. |
