Do you still own physical media?

And do you still routinely purchase new physical media? Music, games, film whatever.

Im firmly in the physical camp. Massive book cases seperated by films together and movies together and then alphabetized. Games are by system then RPG and Non RPG. Books are by fiction and non fiction. Anime has its own shelf. Wrestling ive stored my vhs collection after converting a lot over. Kept the tapes though. They seem...like history in some way. Would feel wrong to junk them.

I had always collected. Got rid of a ton of stuff when the dvd shift happened and have spent some time repurchasing a lot of stuff.

With the digital age though obviously thats going away. A lot of films dont ever get released physically. I searched for years for Charlie Kaufman's "I'm Thinking of Ending Things" physically. Googling every so often to see if it finally was going physical. Finally found a copy of an Oscar screener of the film on ebay last month. Absurd.

Anyways i imagine most people either threw out their physical collections or sold them off. Im expecting 99% to say "nearly nothing" but im curious all the same.

Last movie I bought on Blu-Ray was Justice League, and only have a small collection of DVD/Blu-Rays from before....

Haven't bought a comic book in years.... (also been reading them less in general, but when I do it is just online).... still have a lot of comic books.... even more at my parent's house in Toronto...

Books, I haven't bought a book in many years.... actually, that's a lie... bought two Spanish books last year but only because the library didn't have them and I wanted to finish the series of novels.... everything else I read I'll just get from the library...

Audiobooks have really taken over even for me. I still read but being able to listen while i do other things is just too convenient. I retain details better when i sit down and read though.

Ya... waiting to move to a bigger place to properly organize books/video games. Theyre just kinda scattered now

I actually have a laserdisc collection with 100+ of them and a working laserdisc player... fun lil novelty every once in a while

Ive read that laser discs dont store well. The glue that binds the duel layer discs doesnt hold over time. Whats your experience been like? Have you tried any recently to see how theyre holding up?

Yeah i'm slowly building a large 8 foot book shelf with trades and art books and will probably buy a second at some point.

I still have all my wrestling dvds. I might get rid of the individual ppv's.

I also have a lot of old b-movie horror movies that likely won't always be available on streaming services. As well as stuff like an Off Beat Cinema dvd.

I bought a "WCW/WWF InVasion" dvd at Sam Goody or some shit at the mall in like 2004, thinking it would be a documentary about the WCW invading the WWF, but it was just a one time pay per view called InVasion. I was disappointed but still watched it multiple times and prolly rubbed my dick to the paddle on a pole or whatever match

The streaming aspect is an interesting aspect of this digital era. I wanted to Watch "One Flew Over the Cukoos Nest" but didnt own it. At the time it wasnt streaming anywhere. This film won best picture. It blew my mind there was no streaming option at that time. couldnt even rent it via amazon. I think its on Netflix currently...anyways the point is, over time older parts of cinema just...wont exist.

And games...well so much of the past is gone. You can only hope an IP owner decides to remaster a game or add it to a digital library. I get the convince of digital but it seems really flawed. There's nothing to even retain a digital purchase. If a company pulls it off their servers one day tough titty. The terms of service protect them.

I dunno. Owning is better than "owning it."

I agree that the best way to consume comics is physical.... it just takes up so much darn space....

I am fine sacrificing the physical medium for space saving's sake... and reading online ain't too bad.

I guess I am talking more about scans than the "official" digital releases... feel like the apps and stuff for official digital comics are all terrible, and those that have some sort of "guided view" where you see it panel by panel, word balloon by word balloon, are just terrible.

I suppose I am "stealing" or whatever, but half of the comics that I do own, I never would have bought without reading the scans....

i regularly buy all forms of physical media. i like it being mine. i like that it can't be taken from me or edited. i like (generally) correct aspect ratios or sound engineering or whatever. streaming is convenient but i won't rely on it.

Aspect ratio is major for me but im a huge fan of cinematography so frame composition is very important.

You bring up a good point about editing. I think with the gaming industry we already a lot of post market modifications and that could likely grow over time. Not just patches but regional censorship or even licensing deals expiring. In the modern era you could go back to an older title and find content changed or removed entirely.

I feel like this is a very likely future. And with ad space being sold in games as well. This gen will see advertisements place on in game content. Like a billboard for instance. The content shown however wont be one and done. It will be updated regularly in real time.

I dont view this negatively mind you but when you view this as an artistic medium its odd to think that in 20 years the experience wont be able to be revisited in a purists form. Like trying to watch the original star wars cut today. Nearly edited out of existence.

In some sense you get into a ship of theseus issue. Looking at something like the Last of Us 2nd remaster changing mechanics. If a game doesnt play the same is it the same game?

And wrestling is a great example. Look at wcw and ecw content when re-released. RVD not entering to walk. DDP having generic house music. Hollywood Hogan coming out to the standard NWO theme. It all feels bad. A piece of what it was is gone.

Obviously im not saying digital is bad but there's a lot of draw backs and in 10 years or there won't be many work arounds.

I dont see the downside to limited physical releases though. Collecters wanna collect. If the film costs the price of 1 month of the service after production costs whats the difference

video gaming moved beyond me long ago but it does seem from the outside as uniquely designed to be edited/erased as time passes.

Im fine with the remsters. The ones a few years before the special edition. They touched up some effects but no scenes were added at least

Love physical media. As well as your DVD, CD's etc. I have some autographs books, still regularly buy posters and frame them too.

Lost a LOT of shit last year in the fire. Really small house so we stored most of our things in there. 10 years of our lives - gone.

Gotta rebuild. Dunno if I'll get a ton more or not, as I'd rather start forging again, first.

Topical in my house right now as my wife is trying to convince me to get rid of a bunch of DVD/Blu Rays. She has a point though: decent chunk of my BR collection is MCU and Disney movies which are all now available on Disney+. Then there’s other stuff that is definitely on steaming somewhere. I’m reluctant to let it go though.

I have the entire Dragonball collection on Blu Ray, original, Z, Super, GT and the three latest movies, along with Four seasons of My Hero Academia, Dr Stone and few other box sets of shows I enjoyed like Dexter, True Blood and Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

I started downplaying buying physical media due to not having enough space and nearly 400 Funko pops.

I am like 50/50 with video games. Just bought the Octopath 2 collector edition for instance. Books are 100% physical if we are counting those.

I quit purchasing movies. If it isn't on Netflix or Amazon Prime I will debate renting. There is to much content on those two services already that it is hard to justify making any purchases.

Yep. Sure do.

Purchase DVDs and CDs on the regular. Video games too but not so much since you'll hear about a game only going digital.

Problem is I'm driving farther and farther for "cool stuff" and having to resort online. Once upon a time I had a Gamestop, and f.y.e. in equal distance and either direction and 5-10 minute drive. It was great. Now, gotta drive 30 minutes.

music is the one thing that feels right digitally. I can see wanting to spontaneously listen to a specific song or whatever. That feels right

And you def highlight the upside to physical media. It cant be damaged. I do question its permanence though...when they realize they can only sell you these things once i expect for them be a lot less "yours" very quickly.

The D+ catalog is probably super safe. Despite Disney's stock in the last few weeks its safe long term. That app will probably out live us all.

They're good services for sure. They're definitely what has spearheaded the rise of the pure digital consumer. But when the internet goes out its nice to be able to grab a good movie and sit down.

I dont shop local anymore. Most of the local places have long since folded even if i wanted to but the big issues is the stock. I cant say for certain what the store will have but i can see Amazons inventory right now. Ebay too. Traditional retail cant compete with that at all.

I own a shit ton of physical but over the last few years I started limiting that to older TV shows and Anime bootlegs of series that are hard to find. We're getting old and have no kids and I just realized that when I die, I leave this collection of DvD's and D&D books to absolutely no one

Are you talking about the VHS set that each box was like a monochrome metallic looking picture of a character on a black background? Like one of them was a black box with a gold darth vader? I still have those somewhere I think and now I want to find them. However as you said those aren't the original edits themselves, they are mastered versions that I think released in the 90s if I recall. It isn't much editing though, I think it was more they just cleaned up some of the early special effects like how the land speeder had an orange glow under it and they added some extra footage that didn't make the OG cut.

On topic, Destor knows exactly where I stand on physical media. And that's on top of a pedestal made of physical media where I preach to the world about how digital media is a cardinal sin that highly pleases the devil. I try to not buy things I can't physically take possession of because if I don't have it then it isn't really mine; I'm just renting it long term at that point.

SPOILER: show

I think there's still an unopened set of these at my parent's house because we for some reason had two... wonder if it is worth anything.... nope, not much it seems...

The only difference between the silver and the gold is the aspect ratio. Silver is widescreen; gold is 4:3. Those wide black bars on a normal TV back then were brutal and hardly anyone had big screens because they were huge boxes and cost a fortune.

Im looking at a gold vhs set that says widescreen right on the side...weird. quick google search and it looks like it was printed both ways. Perhaps a change after widescreen became the prefered standard? Very odd
