1. Amatuer (2025) - 7/10

Not a lot to examine with this one but its a real solid revenge flick. Its a power fantasy for weak men. I dont say that as an attack though. It takes a physically meek man who isnt that strong action hero type and places him in the same circumstances your more traditional action/espionage thrillers would feature and it doesnt send him to Mr. Miagi where he develops the skills to achieve his goals....well it literally does send him but that isnt the pay off.

The Myagi is Lawrence Fishburne here and he quickly realizes that Rami Malik has no aptitude where Malik then spends the rest of the film becoming a Jigsaw flavored Jason Borne. And theres something that really works about that as a revenge story.

Supporting cast includes a boat of of good actors making the most of their screen time. Rachel Brosnahan, John Bernthal and Colt McCallany are all good in their limited roles.

Not a classic but im glad i finally made time for it.

2. Good Fortune (2026) - 6/10

Used to the writers guild had a credit for "dialogue by" or in some cases "additional dialogue by." This allowed for someone to come in, like a Joss Whedon, to come in and make the lines a bit punchy-er. This film was a script doctor away from being really good.

Unfortunately without that there's just a ton of talking head scenes with really generic words. For a comedy to have utilitarian dialogue for half its runtime...yikes.

That said Keanu is pretty fun here. He basically plays the angel Gabriel like his character from Bill and Ted. And no i dont remember which he is. There's one scene thats laugh out loud funny. Reeves sits in and a would be union protest and, despite not working there, gives a rousing speech about how dogs deserve health benefits and chicken nuggets for everybody.

As enjoyable as Reeves is Anzari and Rogan bring absolutely nothing but the exact same performances youve only ever seen them do. Except this time they arent the comic relief side characters they should be. This time theyre carrying the emotional core of the film. And i dont think anyone told them that.

Not sure who's job that wouldve been. Id point to the director but that would be Anzari himself. Id say one of the producers shouldve stepped in but...nope...same guy there too. I think the problem has shown itself.

The plot is exactly the plot you think it will be at a macro level but some of the road blocks to closure are nice turns. Not completely paint by numbers as far as getting to the inevitable conclusion.

Structure wise the film runs at a brisk pace once it gets going. 3 act structure. Each act is nearly bookended at exactly 30 min. However getting the story started it does take a fuzz too long getting to the end of the 1st act. 80 min movies are kinda looked down on but in all honesty shaving 10 min out of the set up...couldntve hurt.

Still though i had a smirk on my face more than i didnt so i wont call it bad and for the sake of the dogs questing for union representation everywhere. I'll bump it from a 5 to a 6.

3. Street Fighter (2026) 5/10

The film mostly nails the characters. Guile not so much and Chun Li loses her playfulness in favor of an all business approach but otherwise every is how you want them to be and thats the biggest success of the film in my opinion.

The comedy is hit or miss. Everything with Eric Andre misses WIDE but there's some genuine hits throughout. Some laughs will be had.

Cammys ass is a fucking peach and every second of screen time it gets is worth your ticket. Its truly remarkable and id have paid double for it.

I had a genuinely good time but why i rank it so low is for a few reasons. The biggest is the action isnt shot well. For the most part. There's some moments that are good kung fu but its mostly just an action movie. It shot the way you'd shoot a gun fight. The glimpses pf good kung fu are but theyre just too far and in-between. Whats on offer isnt bad it just isnt good enough to get a passing grade.

That said the story and story editing struggle. Its a very disjointed film tonally. Its pacing is all over the place. It has a truly insane narrative choice in the 3rd act to do a flash back to the scene directly before it and establish a time jump of i dunno...15 min? Its just messy.

When the roller coaster is on the tracks though its fun and the soundtrack is top tier with some great needle drops for several fight scenes.

Very stylized. Has a vision. Way too busy and tries way too much for its run time. I would enjoy a no2 though so take that for what its worth.

4. The Street Fighter (1974) - 7/10

No i did not plan the last two around one another

Sonny Chiba is a beast here. This is what Bruce Lee thought he was making. Super violent movie for its day. Much of the brutality in these fights dwarfs a lot of contemporary horror films. Add on top of it a real bastard as the protagonist and you have a very fun time.
