Sprewell choked his coach for christ's sake. That was well deserved.
I can't disagree with the punishments. You can throw the blame around to anyone in this incident, but it will usually always fall back to the players knowing that they shouldn't get involved. |

Report: Artest suspended 30 games, Jackson, O'Neal get 20
November 21, 2004 DETROIT (Ticker) - It appears the Indiana Pacers will pay a heavy price for Friday's embarrassing melee. WDIV-TV is reporting that Ron Artest of the Pacers will be suspended for 30 games and teammates Jermaine O'Neal and Stephen Jackson will be suspended 20 games apiece for their roles in Friday's ugly brawl against the Detroit Pistons that saw players taking on fans both on and off the court. According to WDIV, center Ben Wallace of the Pistons will be banned for five games. Calling it a "humiliation for everyone associated with the NBA," commissioner David Stern announced Saturday that Artest, O'Neal, Jackson and Wallace have been suspended indefinitely. Stern is expected to specifically announce the length of suspensions for each player by Sunday night. Jackson, Artest and O'Neal all landed their share of punches in the Pacers' 97-82 victory over the Pistons, a game that had to be called with 45 seconds remaining. Reacting to fans who had thrown everything from plastic bottles to chairs at them, Jackson, Artest and O'Neal, among others, went into the stands to retaliate. Stern issued a statement Saturday. "The events at last night's (Friday) game were shocking, repulsive and inexcusable - a humiliation for everyone associated with the NBA," the statement said. "This demonstrates why our players must not enter the stands whatever the provocation of poisonous behavior of people attending the games." In addition to the actions of the league, players also are facing the possibility of arrests. Jackson climbed into the seats and landed a roundhouse right that floored a fan next to another fan who had thrown a plastic beer bottle at Artest, hitting him in the face. Fans continued to throw things and verbally accost members of the Pacers. Several came onto the court and one took a fighting stance against Artest, who dropped him with a punch. O'Neal ran over and floored another fan with a righthanded blow. "That was the ugliest thing I've ever seen in my life as a coach or player," Pistons coach Larry Brown said Friday. "I'm just embarrassed for our league and disappointed being a part of this with young people seeing that." Detroit forward Rasheed Wallace and radio announcer Rick Mahorn went into the stands to try to break things up. Referee Tommy Nunez Jr. was clipped in the head with a thrown bottle, opening a cut. The game was called, which forced the Pacers to make their way through a gauntlet of angry fans who continued to throw objects despite pleas from Brown. Players and team officials were showered with beer, soda and popcorn. No players from either team spoke with the media. With 45 seconds left, Artest fouled Wallace, who clearly overreacted and shoved Artest with a chokehold. Artest walked away but was followed by Wallace, who had to be restrained. While players from both teams jawed at each other and order was being restored, Artest lay down on the scorer's table when he was hit with the bottle, and the Palace looked like a prison riot. |

Also in response to one of Splaya's points, if you watch the foul from Artest it looks like he kicks Ben Wallace in the balls from behind.

Also, he's making such a big deal out of going into the crowd but I saw a few Pistons players in the crowd too, albeit to "break it up" which was actually just to watch it close up from what it looked like. Like I said, ridiculous |

After reviewing the play, Wallace did push Artest in the throat. I missed that.

Artest gets 72 games in the end, not including the Magic game he missed.
Has anyone heard why Tinsley missed the Magic game, did he get injured or something? He appeared fine. The Artest suspension is a joke. Jackson and O'Neal I can understand. Wallace's role in it all has been understated, to only get 6 games he's very very lucky. What did Anthony Johnson do? Pacers are totally screwed now. Someone should congratulate those Detroit fans, they've eliminated one obstacle for their teams title defense. I wonder if someone will try the same with Shaq when the Heat visit Detroit? |

My question is where the heck was security?
Also, Walker went into the Stands in Boston a few years ago and didn't get anything. Was Artest at fault? Yeah, even after getting hit by the debree, you shouldn't go in the stands, especially when he had no idea who did it and the people he attacked said he just kept asking people while he was hitting them "was it you, was it you who did it". Now on the flip side, when fans come on the court, how does Artest know they don't have a knife or a gun? and where the hell was security and/or the cops? I can justify Artest hitting the guy who came up to him, O'neil I can't because the guy he hit, while on the court was just standing there, and was being backed away and O'neil just blindsided him. The cops say they're reviewing the footage, I hope some fans get arrested for their part. |

I can still see them making the playoffs purely because there aren't enough good teams in the East to pass them. Tinsley and Croshere are playing well enough to not completely fall off. I think they will end up 7 or 8 seed.

Stern wanted to send a message to players, don't go in the stands. These suspensions will make most players think twice, but I also think they need to take a better look at security.

Before all this shit happened I had it as
1) Detroit 2) Indiana or 1) Indiana 2) Detroit really too close to call. But now I have Indiana as an 8th seed if they have a really good 2nd half season. |

Imagine a Pacers-Pistons playoff series now, geez that'd be great.
IMO you can excuse Artest and O'Neal for their actions on court, as the fans have absolutely no right to be on the court, and when you're facing 22,000 people against you and have had shit throw at your from the crowd and been punched by crowd members then you can be forgiven for thinking the next person is coming to hit you too. What's Artest supposed to do, wait to get hit before he fights back. Perhaps everyone needs to remember Monica Seles when thinking about fans getting onto the court. I hope the Pacers finish the year strongly and do well. I'd love to see them stick it to the NBA for this, they've been harshly treated imo. |

overall the suspensions arebeyond ridiculous.
I mean Artest gettin the rest of the season? For safety? That's a load of bull. I mean maybe half a season but not the entire rest of the season. Then you give Ben Wallace 6 games? If he would not hav overreacted with that whole foul then the whole incident would not have even happened. this is unjustified punishment for Artest and the Pacers. The Pistons just get a slap on the wrist. out of this whole ordeal. The Pacers get pimp slapped. |

IMO,
I Agree with S&S up there, the suspensions were ridiculous and it was Wallace who started the whole altercation. Stephon Jackson, which many of you didn't notice, hit that fan because the fan threw beer in Artest's face. If you seen a buddy of yours getting something thrown at him/her, you would react. Period. And if you wouldn't, then you aren't a friend. Furthermore, the fans are totally to blame for this incident. Just think: 1. If the cup wasn't thrown, none of this would have happened. 2. If the Mexican guy didn't come on the court, there would have not been further damage. A fan threw a fucking chair in a crowd of people for christ's sake!! Oh yea, where the fuck was security?
