Anyways, I'd recommend:

1984 and Animal Farm- George Orwell
A Clockwork Orange- Anthony Burgess
The Hitchhiker's Guide "Trilogy"- Douglas Adams

Not the most original choices, but I honestly don't read all that much. At least, none that anyone else actually likes.
