It means they're still a big club. You are proving my point by using this example if anything.How many times do you hear people calling leeds a big club?Infact how many times did you hear people say west ham are a big club and belong in the premiership even though they were in division 1?Its a status earnt over a period of time, not just from winning one trophy or having a good season.
