He would have probably been either a Ranger, Blue Jacket or like a Blackhawk. Penguins still had a good chance at getting him. It would have been hilarious to see these teams purposely playing bad to get the #1 draft pick near the end of the season.

Huge trades by the Leafs today, they'll probably still suck for a year or two and then constantly finish 7-9th in the years to come. I think the other teams won they trades.

For those unaware of the details: Phaneuf, Fredrik Sjostrom, and Keith Aulie to the Leafs for Matt Stajan, Ian White, Niklas Hagman and Jamal Mayers. And Giguere to the Leafs for Blake and Toskala.

They've been inconsistent this year (Bruins) compared to last year but once Tim Thomas stops making too many baffling mistakes and the team starts scoring, the team should be much better assuming they get a decent playoff spot number.

The only one I am really upset about is Ian White. He has definitely been the Leaf defenseman this year.

Phaneuf holds all the potential in the deal. If he shakes himself back into being a better player, then the Leafs have a player to build around. Oherwise the Flames won that deal. The Giggy deal is a smart move by the Ducks and it does give the Leafs something better. Good deal all around.

Stajan and White are both free agents. White is going to ask for a large raise probably between 3-4 mill a season, and Stajan will be looking for between 2-3 mill. Hagman makes 4 mill and Mayers is a useless twit. Not sure how the Flames are planning on signing Stajan or White, cause they are right against the cap. I also heard they want Kovy from the Thrashers so I wouldn't be surprised to see Stajan moved.

Yeah you're right about quality declining from the mid 90s as soon as "the trap" hit the scene
The late 90's still had some exciting stuff mostly because of ridiculously good players being in their prime like Lemieux, Jagr, Lindros, Hasek

So the Flames moved Joke-in and Prust to the Rangers for Kotalik and ??? - What purpose is there in that for the Flames? Koalik is a healthy scratch every night and he's owed 6 million over the next 2 years. At least with Jokinen he was a UFA at the end of the year.

Didn't help that they played the Bruins who now own league worst scoring average so once Caps started scoring in 3rd, Bruins wouldn't respond back.

Capitals do have to worry about creating a "SJ Sharks" effect where they become dominate in the regular season but then come up short in the playoffs each year. Although unlike the Sharks, they do advance more times out of the 1st round.

I dunno the Caps have made it to the finals but that doesn't mean anything since the current team is completely different. I think they won't have the Sharks effect. Ovechkin is different than Thornton. Also last year I would say that if they had beat the Pens they would have made it to the Finals. This year I'm thinking Caps/Hawks final.
