EXACTLY!!! Even the black guy was slow....what kind of shit is that? I've never owned a game where I wished death on my own characters because they were a waste and just got in the damn way. If my 2 "decent" characters were killed (usually because the son of a bitch would ambush me in the street), I'd rather just turn the game off and start over.

I couldn't beat any Nintendo game when I was a kid. But Maximum carnage was one of the first games I remember beating, it seems like the Sega and super Nintendo games is when they started making games beatable. Probably because they started realizing that there no one is putting quarters into home counsels.

Nah, you just got better. A lot of NES games were beatable and a lot of the SNES games were still hard.

Plus, Nintendo is still using the lives system, which makes me think they don't know people aren't putting quarters into their "counsels."

Thought about it, and the most frustrating game I've ever played was Ghosts n' Goblins.

The game is pretty easy on the 1st level, but then turns into a gauntlet of brutality. The kicker is even if you get to the final boss, you can't beat him without a cross.
So, if you don't have the cross, you have to play the final level over so you can get one.
Here's the really frustrating part; even if you defeat the final boss, you're informed that everything you just did didn't matter, because it was all a trap laid by Satan. So then, in order to get the 'real' ending, you have to play through the entire game again on a harder difficulty.

Never actually played this game. From what I've heard, it might top 99% of the games usually listed, though.

I played it again recently,I remember being okay at it as a kid,really struggle to even get past the 1st level now,glad I gave up after reading that though.

Probably not what I'd call the most frustrating, but I'm seriously regretting starting Dead Money first in FO: NV Ultimate Edition...so tedious...I've actually had to resort to walkthroughs for the part involving Dog/God and the damned gas valves.

I had megaman 2 on a regular cellphone. Problem was, it was a straight port.

I honestly can't think of any greater an achievement than beating that game on a cell phone touch pad. I couldn't even get to one robot master. And I'm a megaman beast. Totally useless.

Finished up Dead Money Sat. Eve. after I got home and after I looked up what I was doing wrong with the quest "Put the Beast Down". Even played through not only the achievement endings but also made a separate save so I could see the fake ending (vault hunter gets trapped) without being stuck.

For some reason I'm pretty good at Megaman. First time I picked it up was in 2005 and my roommate had gotten an anthology of all the games. He kept getting pissed off and frustrated because of specific spots in the game. When he offered me the controller I just sort of breezed through on "beginner's luck". Was really really weird.

They could be challenging at times, but I have no idea where this recent notion of them being frustratingly difficult games has come from. Castlevania, Contra, Ninja Gaiden, and plenty of other games are much harder, if you ask me.

Chakan the Forever Man on the Genesis was what I thought of. Was only ever able to beat it with a Game Genie. Shit was intense.

They could be challenging at times, but I have no idea where this recent notion of them being frustratingly difficult games has come from. Castlevania, Contra, Ninja Gaiden, and plenty of other games are much harder, if you ask me.
There seems to be this mental filter where people think all NES games are "Nintendo Hard."

NES released enough broken games in addition to games that made you restart from the beginning after dying to justify some of the stigma. If you go down the line of games for the NES I'd wager most were much harder than intended.

And again, the hard games that were fun still had the value of being fun. If the game was fun we not only remembered it, but also spent the time trying to overcome the challenge. A lot of games that were "hard" were also "bad" and therefor the incentive to keep trying wasn't always there.

A lot of us really didn't know any better, too. When you grow up on Battletoads and Dick Tracy, you're kind of wired to think of games that way.
