The fans have the right to cheer for who they want, and I personally am sick of Eugene's gimmick so I didn't mind him being booed, but it is really annoying when the fans' reactions become the focal point of a show, and takes away from my enjoyment of the show.

The matches weren't great for the most part either though to be fair.

(Angle-Eddie, Benoit-Orton and the 6 man tag ruled)

OMG COME ON. Look, Batista was getting cheered over Edge, so there goes your "Y2J" claim. Sure he got a solid pop for his entrance. Who Doesn't?

No people weren't booing Eugene because he was "special." They boo him because he's annoying and because he's a gimmick from the 80's. These gimmicks worked back then when everything was all good and dandy, but the Attitude era destroyed all hopes for gimmicks like this to work. People turned on Eugene real fast when they saw how cartoonish his character was and because he was up in the main event picture wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to soon.

The only heels that really got huge support was Angle and HHH. Orton got a huge pop for winning the strap, but fans will always mark for a world title switch.

I think we just like who we like, and we cheer for them regardless of heel-face stuff. I mean back when Austin-Mania was running wild, we were like every other city, we cheered for him like crazy. So that whole Toronto fans cheer for heels for the sake of cheering heels is BS.

All Vince had to do was drop me an e-mail and I could have told him before the show who would get cheered and who would get heat. Its all about knowing your audience, but the WWE doesn't know anything, and thats why they are always suprised when stuff like this happens. Hell even DDP knows Toronto is a tough town to be a baby in.
Sorry but they never booed Edge before. I'm not saying they cheer heels for the sake of it. I'm saying they go out of their way to give the opposite reactions to what WWE expects whether it's right or wrong. They booed Edge and Benoit for the sake of doing it.

And cheering Hogan spawned months of terrible matches and angles so I'm still blaming you lot.

I don't think people booed Eugene because of his mental disabiltiy but like everyone has said people are finding him stale and boring.

BTW for anyone who was there live did the crowd boo the diva segment. King said they were but I couldn't hear the crowd during the sgment.

No, I think Eugene doesn't deserve to be booed because Toronto thought they're cool if they do it. Eugene is EXTREMELY popular. How an entire arena all happen to hate him is beyond me. He gets booed by one or two people on occasion, because they quite frankly don't like the act, but others that do like Nick, and do like what Nick has accomplished in the Eugene character cheer him, and that is the majority.

I agree wth that post almost exactly. The reason it disgusted me to see the reactions, though, was because they wanted to become a focus part of the show, and they wanted to take away from guys like Nick Dinsmore and JBL working their asses off.

No, they were booing him because they thought they were going be looked on by the rest of the world as "OMG, those guys are doing what they want!!!!!!!!!!11 TORONTO RULES!!!!!!!!!11".

Characters don't get booed straight away if they're stale. You slowly see some of the less easily fooled/impatient people go first. Then those that eventually have the patience to put up with the character. Now wither Toronto is filled with fans that started watching restling at the exact same time, and are equally as intelligent, or they wanted to cheer and boo who they wanted to, not because they wanted to but because they thought it would be cool.

Shut up with this cool defense. Face it, canadians are more honest types. We enjoy the Harts of the world, the benoits..not some crap like eugene who mocks what guys like benoit have tried to accomplish over a large chunk of time. We watch you americans cheer for whatever the wwe puts out, and we sit in disgust of it. Some of you know your shit, but most dont. Am I generalizing, yes I am, but in this case, it doesnt matter.

When you're talking about somewhere near 300,000,000 people (slightly rounded up, taken off census.gov), generalizing is a really quick way to totally kill an argument's credibility. Not all Americans cheer for whatever WWE wants them to cheer for. Not all Canadians are thorough smarks. Considering that Eugene's not that bad of a wrestler and has hence far been a pretty decent guy on the mic (considering the role he's given to play), I'd say he was a bit off the beaten trail from "crap." Different strokes for different folks. It's not like Eugene's less talented for not having paid his dues yet. He's no Benoit when it comes to wrestling, but Benoit's no Eugene when it comes to acting. Not that that's a great explaination, but you hopefully get what I'm trying to say here.

Not everybody watches WWE specifically for the pure, thoroughbred technical wrestling. Some people like their Entertainment a little more than their Sports. It's not "disgusting." It doesn't make the viewer less of an intelligent person. I'm going to assume for the good of mankind that you're NOT the spokesperson for Canada.

That's the Critic's two cents. May wacky antics ensue.

see New York, see Philadelphia, see Chicago

These 3 cities are the toughest cities, but also most loyal to wrestling. At WM XX, we had two guys who didn't care for the business and look what happened to them, they're asses got booed out of the WWE. Yet this same crowd was solidly behind Benoit from the beginning to the end of his match. And at Summerslam 02, people booed the Rock because he was leaving for Hollywood, simple as that.

Bro, you have to trust me on Edge. I made a post about Edge not getting a big reaction in Toronto before Summerslam over at BTR (and I probably did here as well). I know at Mania Edge got little to no recation when he came out. He got a slight pop for the win, and that was it. Then the other sign that Edge is not loved here was the Christian heel turn on him, the crowd was almost completely behind Christian.

And as has been said, Benoit wans't really booed, it was more of just people popping for a title switch than anything else. I remember when Angle beat Rock for the title for the first time, people cheered that, But Rock didn't turn heel or anything, and that wasn't even in Toronto.

Its like Ive said before, Toronto is a tough town to be a babyface, we like who we like, and anyone who tries to play babyface in a phony way (except Hogan, again sorry) will get booed. But I also go back to Austin, he never got booed, so anyone who says they cheer for guys just to be different is just flat out wrong. If that was the case why wouldn't we go out of our way to boo the biggest face of all time in Austin?

I think the biggest difference between Toronto and just about every other city is that there are a ton of "smarks" net fans, whatever you want to call them. And they will just cheer for the guys they like, regardless of heel or face. I mean nobody passes out flyers before the show saying "Lets screw with the WWE, lets cheer all the heels and boo all the faces, that'll show em!".

I dont get your point about Eugene. Are you saying because he plays a retard its wrong to boo him? I mean I know you dont actually think he is a retard, so its not like we are insulting a retard for being a retard. Like LC said, we were turning on the WWE for force feeding us a gimmick that is right out of a tape from 1986 and doesn't belong in 2004. Nobody is against Nick Dinsmore as a person or even as a worker, we just dont like being asked to check our brains at the door by believing that Nick Dinsmore is a retard.

And are you saying Eugene is equivalent to a war hero? I think if a guy does somehting noble like serve in a war they deserve respect, but if a guy jumps in a wrestling ring and mocks retarded people and roll around in small tights with a bunch of guys, they dont really deserve any respect.

With JBL-Taker, I dont think the response was against Taker it was against the WWE for turning the WWE Championship and its rich history into a living joke with JBL. As Ive said before, I like JBL as acharcter, I dont necessarily think he's done that bad with the title, but at the same time I can understand why people would be totally against the idea of him as champ.

I mean lets say it was announced another chapter in the Godfather saga was coming out. And tickets went on sale before you knew anything about the movie. Then you get to the theatre and instead of having great actors like Robert Duvall, Al Pacino, De Niro and Marlon Brando you get Duvall with Andy Dick, Howie Mandell and Carrot Top. Do you have to sit there and 'respect it just because its the Godtaher franchise'? And even if its an average movie, wouldn't you still be upset because it makes a mokery of the Godfather franchise which was beloved and respected by many many people?

I can see this as a simialr deal. People respect the WWE Title, but when you put people who are so undersving of the spot some people, no check that a lot of people might turn on it. Its the WWE that disrespected the title by putting it on someone who never was anywhere close to the main events and before anyone was ready to accept him as a main eventer.

I understand the whole "fans can cheer & boo what they want" argument, but come on now... The wave thing is excusable. Like someone said the match wasn't that great so they decided to do soemthing fun like the wave, no big deal. But to blatantly boo the guys that are marketed to be cheered for is stupid. It ruins the atmosphere. I'm sure I wasn't the oly one who felt weird and started scratching my head when Eugene and Edge got booed. I was thinking "did I miss something on Raw?" The fans in Toronto were great at Wrestlemania X-8, but inr eality their intense cheering for Hul;k Hogan ruined their biggest angle at that time.

Thats a joke!

The ONLY reason that match was remembered like it is was because we brought back Hulkamania. The match itself was not very good, but the fans cheering for Hogan 100% over Rock made the match. And then some other cities like Montreal kept the ball rolling by showing love for the big lug as well.

[QUOTE=Xero Limit 126]Ive heard on more than one occasion people booing Eugene, so it's not an isolated incedent...

The NY crowd, especially at MSG, rips into every little thing, most noteably the Lesnar/Goldberg match at Mania... When I was at SummerSlam 2002, everyone was booing Rock and cheering Lesnar, when Rock was the face going into it... It just depends on where they are and what's happening/QUOTE]i was there and i booed the rock just because of the fact i think he is a horrible wrestler. This was also when he was constantly leaving the wwe for hollywood which i think caused even more heat towards him. I also remember after the match he was about to cry which was funny.

Please. There is no way that a comparison can be made between the two; wrestling and war.

And those people paid for their ticket and thus can boo anyone they like. If someone doesn't lie it, too fucking bad, its their money and they can cheer for who they want.

The WWE has stated that crowd reactions do dictate the course of storylines and character development.

While I agree that the crowd can cheer whomever they want to, I thought the jeering of Eugene took a lot out of the atmosphere of the match. I say this only because Eugene was being portreayed as a disavantaged wrestler seeking revenge against the person that had done him wrong. Clearly, Eugene was the face, and HHH was the heel. By booing Eugene, the crowd blurred the distinction between face and heel, and I felt this really took away from the match. It was only until Eugene emulated SCSA that he got his face reaction back.

Exactly. Not every place is the same; even all of the time.

What is with this politically correct bullshit anyway? People can boo or cheer who they like. Its there perogative. They don't have to justify that to anyone, especially since they are the ones paying for the ticket.

Yeah I do remember Christian being more over with the Toronto crowd when he turned on Edge so you have a point. I would say they cheer the renegades more than heels over faces really.

As for Eugene, most crowds around the U.S have been booing him so you can't blame the Toronto crowd there.

Maybe I just can't get over how they made Hogan's career again. Stupid Toronto bastards!

How would Toronto fans think they would be cool by booing him? They can boo whoever they want its there choice. Just because Eugene is extremely popular everywhere else won't necessairly make him popular in Toronto or any other city for that matter, and because he's popular everywhere else does that mean we have to cheer for him because everyone else?

I think they booed Benoit because now he's being announced as hailing from Atlanta. On Raw there was a sign that said --GO BACK TO ATLANTA-- during the main event which I'm guessing was directed at Benoit. But most likely I'm wrong.

I really have no idea why Orton would be cheered though. It just proves that he does not have the Bret Hart love in Canada. Benoit I mean.

Nick Dinsmore=Close to Benoit in terms of talent. How can you "be honest" with wrestling when you have a guy with the talent of many a wrestler working his ass off? Americans are polite to who goes in there and works their ass off, they don't only cheer for the guys that came out of their country. More honest? Not at all. I'd say more biased towards those that are the stereotypical popular guys around the net.

It's unfair and too early at this point to compare Nick to Benoit. It's not the talent it's the gimmick. LOL of course you don't just cheer for guys from your country that would be what 80% of the roster? Polite? New York, Long Island are just two cities that have the tendancy to react the way Toronto does.

The point about the war hero thing was basically just a scenario I came up with. If you returned from war, and your country loved what you did for them, would they boo? If they did how would you feel. Nick Dinsmore is far from a war hero, but he goes in their for the people of Toronto, puts on great matches (just what they like to see), and he gets booed for it.

I realise that "Eugene" is an act, but I still think it's a little off to boo him because he's acting like he's supposed to. These people could have lost poor Nick his job if they kept on booing him. The current slump was blamed on Dinsmore at one stage, and that ticked me off. I'm not saying that eugene deserves respect because he's a great wrestler, but I think he deserves respect just because he can do a good job with what he has. Would it be so hard to respect that and maybe just sit silent during the match instead of booing you ass off, and insulting this guy? Quite frankly, I haven't bee fooled so to speak by the gimmick, but I can ease up on it and take it as a reasonable act. It is a little insulting at first, but it ends up being less of a mockery when people get behind the character.

I agree JBL may have been viewed as undeserving, bt he's worked his ass off for the people, and he's come off as a credible and decent worker. He's gotten more heat leading into his feuds than almost anyone else on the roster (maybe minus Eugene doing his job, no matter how degrading it is). If the people really wanted to voice their opinions, why not start a chant like "JBL Sucks" or even just cheering the heel. I think there were better ways for Toronto to handle that.

But Eugene has never done anything good for Toronto. The fans dont like the GIMMICK so they booed. I mean I wans't there, but I would have done the exact same thing, and I spend a great deal of time convincing people HHH is the devil. But I still would have been standing yelling "TRI-PLE H" "TRI-PLE H". Why? Because I hate the Eugene character. Its no disrespect to Nick Dinsmore, its just that I feel the WWE should know this kind of gimmick has no business in a WWE ring in 2004.

I agree that JBL has worked hard, once again Ive defended him a great deal on here. But at the same time I can understand why people would shit on him as champion. And if they chanted "JBL Sucks" the Toronto fans (which like I said is heavy on the smarks) they know JBL would go to the back and go "look at all that heat I got". Really the best reaction they could give was what they did. There's no denying the fans rejected the match, there's no way to spin that to say JBL drew a lot of heat or the acoustics were bad in the arena. You cant deny fans were bored where they start a wave.

IS A DAM GIMMMICK. A GIMMICK. THOSE people can give two craps about Nick Dinsmore ,the person, if he's running around with a gimmick from the 80's which we are suppossed to be past now. Those gimmicks won't get over anymore. People like to cheer wrestlers who are tough and cool now and days. This is not about Nick Dinsmore, this is ALL about the character of Eugene.

People have turned on a lot of gimmicks before which they were suppossed to cheer and in which the guy playing the gimmick was a good wrestler. It happens. Eugene will turn heel if this keeps happening and who knows, he may turn out to be one hell of a heel.

I will say this though. I think if Eugene was brought in as a heel (don't know how they would do it, but they did it with a clown so..) that character would be getting cheered right now because fans seems to love to cheer heels, especially ones who play their gimmick over the top. Plus he's a hell of a wrestler, so the fans would of got behind him. That's why I think he'll do better as a heel.

The Eugene thing is a gimmick, but he goes in there and puts uyp with this gimmick and he works his ass off. I think it is a bit of a slap in the face to go to an event and booing both gus in the ring.

The thing is though, Eugene IS OVER. He usually gets standing ovations from every crowd, it's just Toronto that have stood out.

I think eventually the Eugene character will be dumped and Nick Dinsmore will reveal he played us all. I can see Dinsmore becomming a new member of Evolution. Maybe Conway as well, so we can see a "Lords of the Ring" tag team.
