I am stunned I didn't know that too. So what if the pitcher gets up 10-0 and is taken out after three innings. The game ends 10-0, who gets the win? The first reliever used?

You think really Jeter is a better defensive shortstop than Gonzalez? Offensively its not a contest but Gonzalez can flash the leather. I dunno a lot of the stuff you listed is opinon (obviously) so it could either way but even if it is how you viewed it, they don't play the games on paper. Foulke's going to have a very short leesh, I can't see them giving him many chances to pitch like he pitch today. I think they would be better off putting Papelbon in the closer role, but it's still early obviously, so maybe he can turn it around. I've kinda lost faith him in him though, hopefully he can prove me wrong. So maybe saying the Red Sox should be the favorites was a reach, but I definetely see them being the favorites for the wild card atleast.

I know you like to knock Jeter's defensive abilities, Stima, saying he's overrated. Perhaps he is however he's still one hell of a good defensive SS

No hes a good defensive player, I sometimes feel he's a bit overrated but that doesn't mean I don't think hes a great on the defensive side. Gonzalez is known for his defense though, I guess I'm just saying I think it is definetly debateable who is better on the defensive side of the ball.
Only thing I ever really knocked about Jeter is if he turns a good play, people ride his dick like it is the greatest thing ever. Like when he "dove" into the stands last year (more like catching the ball then running into the wall after the fact) people where flipping out like it was the best play they have ever seen when in reality it was an above average play with an unfortunate ending because of the wall. I am pretty sure one person actually might have even considered it the play of the year, I am not exactly sure though. |

Fan tosses syringe near Bonds
Posted: 43 minutes ago SAN DIEGO (AP) - A fan tossed a syringe near Barry Bonds as he came off the field in between innings on Monday at Petco Park, and the San Francisco Giants slugger said he picked it up in his glove and carried it off the field. The syringe apparently did not have a needle. "I just put it off the field so no one would get hurt," said Bonds, who is under investigation by baseball for alleged steroid use. The syringe toss occurred after the bottom of the eighth inning of the San Diego Padres' 6-1 win over the Giants. "If that's what they want to do, embarrass themselves, then that's on them," Bonds said. "That has nothing to do with me at all." According to the book "Game of Shadows," written by two San Francisco Chronicle reporters, Bonds used a vast array of performance-enhancing drugs, including steroids and human growth hormone, for at least five seasons beginning in 1998. According to the book, Bonds used several substances in various forms, including by injecting himself with a syringe and taking injections from his personal trainer. Bonds, who has denied using performance-enhancing drugs, was booed often by the sellout crowd of 43,767 on Monday. "I don't judge them," Bonds said. "I have to concentrate on baseball. I leave that up to you guys to make those statements in the paper." Richard Andersen, the Padres executive in charge of Petco Park, didn't immediately return a telephone call seeking comment. |

The Sox have a shot at the wild card but my feeling is the wild card will come out of the central division (Chicago or Cleveland). Also, Toronto is gonna be breathing down their necks. Tampa Bay is going to be halfway decent (and would be a good team if they had pitching, they should really concentrate on dealing guys like Huff, Lugo and Gathright for pitching), and Baltimore might not be half bad if Mazzone can work with Baltimore's pitchers, who all have a lot of potential. I still think Boston will finish 2nd, but they're in a tough division. I can't see them winning as many games as Cleveland or Chicago, who should both win at least 90 again. |

I didn't think the Wildcard would come out of the AL East last season either, but it did. I am hopeful that the Red Sox are able to win the AL East outright though. The Yankees lineup is pretty ridiculous, but it was pretty ridiculous last season too.

I guess my question (pardon me for bringing this out of nowehre) is, do people think that Justin Morneau is nothing now? The reason I ask is because last season the Twins were thought of as a World Series contender, but then largely in part of Morneau's struggles they were merely a 500 team.
So where I get my question from is that people are making the AL Central out to be such a two-team race. In reality, Morneau was injured last season and below his ideal playing weight. Now at the age of 24, it seems like he has been completely wiped off the map as an upcoming player. Why is he regarded so low? And what this all stems from is the Twins low expectations this season. Well, not neccessarily low, but of ESPN's however many "experts", only one had the Twins even in the playoffs. That is shocking to me, because there is no doubt that they are a better team than last season. The pitching staff is among the top in all of MLB, the two best players are 22 and 24, a high profile second baseman was brought in, and it is hard to imagine first and third base getting any worse. With any luck, first base could be the strongest position on the field. So I am wondering if that is what it is, that people lost faith in Morneau ever being a great player. Of course I have a bias, but the Indians are incredibly overrated, basically the poor mans Red Sox. There a couple good bats mixed in there, but it's not like they are the Yankees or something. I have faith that Morneau will get back on track this season, and if not the playoffs than at least second place in the division. If Morneau is anything close to what he could be, there is no way the Twins can do any worse. |

Morneau should rebound, however when you look at the WSOX and their hitting and their pitching, it's tough to project the Twins ahead of them. That leaves the wildcard race. Thoe only way I see the Twins winning that is if the East teams completely destroy each other

The Twins just don't compare to the Sox or the Indians, or really any of the top teams in the AL. If they played in the NL maybe they could win the wild card.

What I mean is just that last year the Twins were a projected World Series contender, and now this season they come back either improved or with an extra year of experience in every position but they are trapped in a hole for third. In a way I prefer to be the underdog a bit, because the two season's where the Twins were projected to win they almost blew it. I guess I just know more than the experts, as usual. |

I didn't realize that Toronto had that deep of a lineup, but Halladay vs. Santana, you can't complain about a loss there I guess.

See this is the difference between Zito and Harden. Zito gives up a couple hits or walks and he panics and forgets how to throw strikes and loses his release point on all his pitches. Harden has 2nd 3rd nobody out, no big deal, K's Sheff, K's ARod, K's Giambi. Zito and Chavez have been there so long they have become accustomed to choking. Thats why if they win its gotta be the young guys, they haven't been through all the playoff shit.

I can see a really slow start for the Twins, and maybe a season worse than usual. They looked the exact same as last year. One player was hot, the rest were ice cold. Two home runs, but nobody can get on base to make it matter. And then there is the bad inning, where the game is decided on some stupid multi-run home run. It is like everything bad of last year coming back right away. Then you look at the opponents waiting in line, it's like White Sox, Indians, Yankees, Angels or something like that. BAHHH

It's not one start. Zito has repeatedly done this over the last few years. Harden is yet to. I expect Zito to have a great season, he's a great pitcher who can be dominant for long stretches. All I'm saying is that it did not surprise me one bit that when in a tough situation against the best offense in baseball, Zito combusted and Harden was not phased.

I think you can tell something from the first start if it is repeating something. Like if Zito had a great start and Miz said "He will be great all year" that is one thing, but if he shows the same faults as he has in the past, it is reason to believe that he hasn't solved his problems.

I don't know what to think about the Jays, it's hard to tell after one game. I do like their roster a lot better than I did yesterday though, after looking at it a little more. They have a very solid middle of the order if it pans out, and some pitching good enough to mess stuff up. I would say they look to be a more all around solid team than Boston. But it's so hard to say, because you can't judge an offense by one game especially against a guy like Santana. It will be interesting, but I like their offseason moves now.
