Being injured doesn't help, its not because premiership defenders have suddenly learned how to shut him down.

Zidane never totally blew me away until the knockout round of the World Cup last year. Granted I didn't see a lot of Read Madrid matches.
Also, I don't think Ronaldo would fit in the English game. |

Hasn't Ronaldo's problem always been fitness and dedication, basically?

Unfortunately his injuries have probably stopped him from achieving the status he could have, possibly as the greatest of all time. In his early days he was an awesome athlete with supreme footballing talent. The perfect modern footballer. He certainly should still be regarded as one of the best ever and can cement it at Milan, away from the awful situation at Madrid. Also, RTE pundits are the only ones being honest about Cristiano Ronaldo at the moment. He's being over-hyped. When he does the business regularly in big Champions League games or against top Premiership sides he can start being called a great player or the best in the world. David Villa is currently the best player all round for me. His contribution to Valencia is outstanding - he takes the set pieces, he scores goals, he creates almost as many goals (maybe more), he turns it on against all sides and he always works for the team. Almost sounds like Thierry Henry from a few seasons back, except for the turning it on against all teams and the work rate bits. I always maintain that Deco and Sammy Eto'o are more important to Barcelona than Ronaldinho. Without Eto'o (and Larsson) there is a lack of work being done at the front. They defend from the top of the pitch and work back to help their team mates. Ronaldinho plays highlight reel tricks and takes the plaudits. |

I think Ronaldinho has always been slightly overrated because of his technical ability, but the times I have seen him in big games he doesn't seem to fully come through. I have no doubt that he can do things with his feet that no other man alive can, but Gerrard or Zidane can control a game better.
As for Cristiano Ronaldo, I tend to disagree. He isn't the best player in the world, but his technical ability and his ability to score really set him apart. He is already great at 22, but he can develop a lot more as a player, which will be exciting to see. |

This is random, but from the Tottenham-Fulham game I went to the other day, I think Aaron Lennon is a great player and I think Clint Dempsey will be a very solid player as well.
Lennon was incredible to watch. He is so fast and everywhere on the field, I can see how England missed him in the Spain friendly. As for Dempsey, they put him in as a sub but he immediately had an impact - setting up a great shot and nearly scoring as well. I would guess that he gets out of Fulham relatively soon, sometime next season, because I think he is good enough to play for one of the better EPL teams. Probably not Big Four, but he should be on a team competing in Europe. |

Lennon has a pile of potential, thats it so far though. Ronaldinho isn't overrated unless you take in utter rediculous hype by people that don't really know the game but needs someone like Eto in front of him, if Eto had started the other night theres no chance Liverpool would have won that one at all. Ronaldo to score at least 15 Serie A goals by the end of this season not a bother to him as long as he plays which he should.
Don't know how hard it is to track down old games on the net but if you can BCWWF grab a few of Ronaldo a few years ago and realise how frightingly goof he was. Came back from terrible injuries and basically a breakdown and adapted brilliantly |

I can try to look around. I have seen a lot of videos of him back in the day, like some goals while he was on Inter and stuff, and he was pretty sick.
Do you think he stays around until 2010? He made it sound like that was his plan. |

I think Cristiano Ronaldo is still pretty immature in general to be honest. He has hissy fits when things don't go his way, and he's yet to understand the concept of playing it safe. Almost invariably his little tricks add unecessary risk to plays which he could execute safely going by the book...I know the guy's got flare, but the truly great players know when to buckle down and get the job done, and when to have a little fun.

Lol, i find it funny how there's always someone, no matter what, who comes up with the 'he's over rated' or 'overhyped' bullshit. I knew someone was going to say that about Ronaldo, but the fact is he deserves the praise for the amazing season he's had and i think everyone is getting excited because he revealed in the paper that ferguson said he would make Ronaldo the best player in the world, and the more he continues to score and play well for Utd, the more hyped he will get.
Its impossible not to get overhyped these days anyway, considering the amount of coverage football gets in the media, so to anyone saying 'he's overhyped', well really, you could say that about anyone in football. You might aswell say Ronaldinho is overhyped, its a weak argument to use to put down a player of Ronaldo's quality especially. Last edited by Londoner; 02-24-2007 at 01:47 PM. |

Ronaldinho IS overhyped. If he was hyped purely on his skills it wouldn't be a problem as lets face it he's phenomenal in that department...But world player of the year? Come on

There's always someone who disagrees, i on the other hand believe his praise/hype was well deserved, he did amazing things to help turn Barcelona around. Before Ronaldinho Barca were nothing or have you forgot that?

They've played champions league football I think every year but one in the last 10 years, hardly 'nothing' is it? Not to mention they're one of the richest clubs in the world

Nothing compared to what they were now, did you not read that post? Do you remember what shit they were in before Ronaldinho came? They had not one the spanish league title for 6 years until he came and inspired them, they were just having poor result after poor result before him.

They didn't win the Spanish league until they signed Eto'o and Deco. I'd say those players are as much a part of the recent success as Ronaldinho. Anyone who actually watches Spanish football regularly will understand that, and will see that it's no coincidence that Barcelona's wretched form lately has happened while Eto'o was out injured.
The things Rivaldo was doing for Barca were incredible also. The rest of the team was just Dutch and bad. |

Well that maybe the case, but Ronaldinho was the star of the team that they were bullding around. People always hate on the top player though, i'm not surprised by this.

He's the star name and an amazing footballer, but he's not a one-man show. Rivaldo almost was in the 1990s for Barcelona. The attention given to him can cause team spirit problems, as with Eto'o who quite rightly points out that if he were himself Brazilian, he'd be seen as the best player in the world.

Ronaldinho is more than just flare, what about his amazing goals that have helped Barca? Not to mention his tricks/skill/passing ability/movement across the pitch, there's a lot more to Ronaldinho than flare and if you truly think that thats all he's about then you're retarded and not worth arguing with. Even as i type this post, they're talking about how key Ronaldinho has been to Barca in this match against Bilbao, Ronaldinho just won them a free kick from causing the defence all that trouble and he just hit the bar with the free kick. Everything he does threatens the other team in some way.

I think we are simply misunderstanding each other, i'm going to just go over these arguments so we are clear.
The point i am arguing is not that he's a one man show, but that he's not overhyped either. You guys however are saying that Ronaldinho is overhyped and that Barca would be just as good without him, right? I personally believe that without Ronaldinho, over the whole season, Barca would not do aswell, he's commercially important to them aswell as on the pitch which is probably why he gets more coverage also than most. |

I don't think Barca would do as well either, but as ECG said I think crediting him with the teams resurgence brushes aside the massive impacts Eto'o and Deco (cunt) in particular have made

I'll agree with Eto'o, not so much Deco, but Ronaldinho was key to inspiring those players i think cause of his flare as you pointed out, but that's not all he has. He just gives the team that extra something that you need in the midfield.

He also has tonns of charisma though, you can't discount that. I mean he can do incredible things with the ball, but the fact that he is always smiling and has hilarious hair make him a very likeable player as well. That definitely plays a role in his popularity.

^ And that also helps to inspire the team on the pitch.
