I gotta say, it's a great angle, but it seems wasted. Does the "Mr. McMahon" character really warrant the time and effort dedicated to him right now in 2007? As a bit part player, fine. As an authority figure, fine. But the focal point of what may turn out to be the biggest angle of the year (hot off the heels of arguably the previous frontrunner, that being the Donald Trump crossover, also prominently featuring Vinnie Mac)?
I don't mind that they killed off a character... I'm a bit old school and oftentimes shake my head at some of the entertainment aspects we are expected to buy (and listing Raw as an "action adventure" program) but recognise that these are characters on the TV screen and an occasional on-screen death isn't inexcusable. When said character is so closely related to the real person behind the gimmick, to the extent of sharing the same name, the blurring of the lines of fiction and reality can make for great TV, but part of me thinks a death might be a bit too far (I mean, if "Mr McMahon, the owner of the WWE" was a character played by Joe Bloggs the actor it wouldn't make it so near the knuckle). I have to admit, when the limo exploded on Raw I just went "wow". It was the absolute last thing I expected (although I was half expecting some kind of suicide angle, I certainly didn't expect the explosion). Shock TV worked in the late 90s, but recently has seemed tame and out of touch. Here's one angle that is intriguing, unexpected, makes a degree of sense (unless they fuck up the explanation) and actually has made people sit up and take notice. It has also got people talking about WWE again. I gave it a But in the meantime, I'm the most interested I've been in years. Watch them fuck it up next week. |

The angle has certainly caught my interest... and I haven't watched wrestling in 3 years. I just happened to be watching for the last half hour of that Raw.
The problem is, as pretty much everyone has mentioned, they'll screw it all up somehow. It'll go from "cool" to "stupid," like all the other shocking events that've happened. But yeah, I voted

I don't at all care for them ringing the bell and all that as though he were really dead. Disrespectful to those who really have. But hopefully it will only have happened on ECW and maybe Smackdown this week and then they won't do that part again. If so, I'll be taking a "wait and see"-style attitude.
I'll still expect Rikishi to be responsible for it, though. |

I don't really like it. Mostly I think it's stupid. Sure, it gets people talking and all, but meh...not a spot meant for pro wrestling, I don't think.
Sure, "it's just a TV show", but pro wrestling's always had that ability to walk fiction and non-fiction, with the exception of a few of the aforementioned other totally over-the-top angles. Then you always had the WWE claiming, "we don't have guys shoot each other, stab each other [done with Carlito and Cena back in '04, though], etc. etc., etc." Yeah...try claiming that now. I also hope they realize the impact this has on their credibility for real deaths and the like. Sure, we as wrestling fans should know how it all works, but they do all these things to act like it's real. When all these referenced movie characters died in movies, did their movie deaths make the news? Did they fly flags at half mast for them? Was the next movie made dedicated to their memory? |

I think the phrase "There's no such thing as bad publicity" is actually disproven by this. Most of the publicity I've seen are by haughty people using this as another condemnation of our "fake sport."
Which it is, by the way. It's fake. And over-the-top scenes like this won't get more mainstream people to watch, it'll just reaffirm that wrestling is for inbred retards. |

It'll be RVD, and he'll shoot on Vince saying "fucking kayfabe, I wanted to do it for real", thus paving the way for him to neatly move elsewhere / retire. lol
Nah, in all honesty, I think if anything, it's stirred interest in WWE more. |
