Cena's attire is nothing but perfect for him. He's carrying the company as thier Champion and needs to sperate himself from the pack. John Cena isn't selling wrestling. He's selling John Cena. He's suppossed to appeal to your younger crowd. He dresses a lot like your everyday kid-young adult. The jean shorts, the sneakers, the hat, the t-shirts. He just looks like he could be one of my college buddies. And that's exactly what they want to do with him.
SO yes, I think the attire and his character is perfect for him. |

As for this "wrestling" thing, WWE does everything to market themselves without "wrestling" being mentioned.
And I don't recall anyone getting on Raven or Justin Credible's case when they wore shorts. Or anyone else that didn't wear tights or trunks for that matter. |

It feels to me like people who don't like John Cena are grasping as straws for more and more reasons to hate him. As people have already stated in this thread, Cena's attire does fit his character, and if he actually wore 'wrestling' tights with the limited 'wrestling' he actually does, I think that'd look even more ridiculous. Sure, he's billed as the best, but he's a brawler, not a wrestler.
What about The Undertaker? Should he be in a singlet? |

Remember when Raven started wearing a skirt? That was gay.
Also, I am willing to bet that Mike Stima is like John Cena in real life. |

Remember when Abe "Knuckleball" Schwartz wore those baseball pants? What a jerk.

If John Cena didn't have the belt, I would be fine with him.

Rob, do you just have a hard time picking up on sarcasm or do you just ignore it so you can come off as a genius?

I don't necessarily agree with your point, but I can understand why you'd be upset about it. From a purist, or traditional standpoint, it's like a slap in the face to the industry for the CHAMPION to say that the style accepted for so many years "isn't his thing".
Like I said though I personally don't care either way but I could see how it would be bothersome. |

There are a lot of wrestlers who look like jokes in "normal" attire. London and Kendrick come to mind, and of course the Power Ranger...
And I mean, really, Mankind looked like a huge fucking moron later in the gimmick yet he was, and still is I suppose, one of the most over talents. Attire should take backseat. I still admit that MVP looks like a fucking moron but I'm warming up to him as a performer. Cena is a solid main eventer. Granted, if there was someone of Austin or Rock quality they'd be ahead of him, but I could easily see him being in the attitude era in a feud with one of them. Hell, I could even see him with the title around 2000. He couldn't have lead the company, but having him leading now instead of some douche like Henry or abomination like Khali is better than nothing. |

I really don't see why everybody hates MVP's attire.

And the wrestling thing is kind of a non-point. You are right, but that really doesn't mean the WWE should be doing that. Last edited by Mr. Nerfect; 07-19-2007 at 02:41 AM. |

What London, Kendrick and MVP wear would be classified by me as closer to what John Cena wears, as it is them trying to be different, and set themselves apart from the rest. Attire should definitely take a back seat, I'm not trying to say it should be the only key in whether or not a wrestler is pushed, that's ridiculous. I'm just saying that the top guy wrestling in street clothes would be like me swimming in the Olympics wearing a suit. Not only does it look stupid, but I think I would be offended if I were a swimmer, or a fan of swimming, because this moron jumps in wearing a suit. John Cena offending people like that fit his 2002/2003 persona, but now the WWE is trying to make him loved. Stone Cold Steve Austin, JBL and The Undertaker could all be classified as brawlers, but they all wear proper attire (I would argue that Taker needs to stop looking like he's playing Satan in the local ballet production, though). Cena is still pretty awful (his selling is just as bad), but I think if he wore attire, his movements around the ring would look more precise, and less like he has no clue what he is doing. I think I would be able to look at him as a talented guy who is being watered down by the WWE, and perhaps have more sympathy for him. |

The "separating himself from the pack" point is probably the one I most agree with. I think separating himself in terms of how interesting he is would be a much better way to do it, though. You know, get some depth going? Stone Cold Steve Austin was the top guy in the WWE for years, and he wore black trunks, black boots and later on, a black or coloured knee brace. John Cena needs to wear shorts just to be different? I'm not buying it. I can understand it in theory, but I just don't think it holds up too much weight. John Cena would changed his attire and still be the same boring guy, at least to me. |
