To give an example, Alien Syndrome was intended to be Wiiware. It's much larger than the VC titles. It was then burned on to disc, but...

Virtual Console is specifically ports from old systems. As such, they will be comparable in size to the original games.

WiiWare includes the Channels you may have already downloaded, and will includetitles that may be wholly original or may not be, but they will be more varied in size.

Hell, the Check Mii Out channel just took a chunk out of my system's remaining capacity.

All the content so far released as WiiWare has been comparably larger, though, so count on it. Especially if you're looking at a graphic update of No Mercy (Which may not happen).

And hey, for NM, it may make no difference. Though I will point out again that you can't play directly from a memory card (Which they could easily fix with an update, and would be all it takes for me to stop caring about an HDD...).

For those interested, some Wii Ware details were posted on Kotaku today:

More WiiWare Details (File Size, Budgets, Etc)

Interested in learning a bit more about WiiWare? Course you are. Keep reading. On the latest IGN Wii podcast, a load of details on how the system will work were revealed, adding to the collective body of WiiWare knowledge. Probably the most important are that game's have a size limit: 40MB. How that Final Fantasy game's coming in under that, we've not the foggiest. Apparently most budget sizes are under $100,000 (ie peanuts), prices are being set by developers and those devs can only release one game a month. Consider our interest piqued.

40 MB? While that could make things easier, it seems like it could be potentially crippling.
