I was going for the first person who popped into my head, and I am not Noid, so I couldn't get away with name-dropping Val Venis.

replace Punk with a well-pushed Matt Hardy, I guess. I dunno.

I'm pretty sure the Hardyz also outdraw DX.

No but seriously, I only responded that way because of the "prove me wrong" thing you posted. Consider it tongue in cheek. Or tongue between your cheeks, if you're bent that way.

The problem being that Cena is evidently a major merchandising boon. While I can neither prove nor disrpove that Punk or Hardy or DX could be a bigger merchandising draw if properly marketed in a feud with emotional investment, but it actually seems quite the long shot.

1. The 1997 Hart Foundation - RIP Owen, Bulldog and Pillman (but then, knowing me, you all probably knew this was a given)
2. Stable Wars c. 1997 and into the Attitude Era (I loved the whole NoD, DoA, Hart Foundation, DX, Truth Commission, Los Boricuas stuff)
3. Matches that last longer than seven minutes (also, matches between two faces, usually mid-carders, that seem irrelevant to the storyline but still prove to be really fuckin' good)
4. Storylines that didn't revolve around Vince McMahon or his family (I used to love his commentary though)
5. A unified roster with one set of championships (a 'champion of the world' sounds much more prestigious than a 'champion of the company' - I miss the days when they were one and the same. The WWF/E World Heavyweight Champion of a unified roster is much better than having the 'company champion' on the A-show and the 'world champion' on the B-show)

Honourable Mention: the F. All of my friends from school that watched wrestling back in the day still refer to it as WWF and the World Wrestling Federation. SUch a name makes the 'sport' at least sound more legitimate to the 9 year old marks ...

Wrestlers not being forced to "tone down"
This is one of the most ridiculous things about the modern WWE era. It's actually made guys more sloppy, because when they are permitted to stretch their legs a bit, it seems they're more likely to find themselves over-shooting, or missing the mark with their spots.

When he was in the cruiserweight division, there was little risk of Gregory Helms severely injuring someone with The Vertebreaker. It would have helped get him even more over. If Paul London were allowed to do half the stuff he can do, then he would be mega-over, and could probably move some t-shirts. I'm not saying an instant World Champion, but there is no reason he and Brian Kendrick could not be bigger stars (in ratio) than say The Hardys. Taking The Hardys from their tag team stage, London & Kendrick are better wrestlers, better on the mic, more attractive (I guess) and if they were still with Ashley, would have a slightly hotter slag in their corner. The London Calling trumps the Swanton Bomb, too.

That's just one detriment of the "controlled" WWE environment.

I'm too lazy to do more, but I might get around to it later.

Company title on the A show? I thought that the wwe championship was the first ever world heavyweight belt to be created in the wwe. Smackdown's championship came into existence on RAW back in 02 when H got it awarded from the E B (On paper). It even has a lineage to the NWA and the WCW World Heavyweight titles. Really confusing.

1. Stables. The Nation, DX, Corporation, Ministry all made people important without throwing titles on them. There is a desperate need for stables now to get some of the young guys in cahoots with the older guys to get over.

2. Decent women's matches. I didn't mind the women's division when Chyna, Lita, Molly Holly, and Ivory were wrestling. These girls could actually wrestle. But to see the likes of Candice Michelle and Kelly Kelly wrestling is a joke. They are getting back to this with Mickie James, Beth Phoenix, Melina, and Victoria - hopefully that trend continues.

3. Randy Orton's pyro and pose at the top of the ramp. Awesome.

4. The winged eagle title belt. I know it's never coming back, but that was the belt when I started watching, and all the other belts look like crappy replacements. The Winged eagle, I sorely miss.

5. The Rock. As a face, heel, or tweener, this guy was entertaining as hell. There is not a person that has even been in the WWF/E that has put as much time into his promos as Rock did. He was so entertaining, and every week there was something to see because you knew Rock was gonna get on the stick and go insane. He didn't rely solely on his catch phrases, but when he used them they were timed perfectly and allowed for the fans to chime in. He was the most charismatic wrestler to ever perform in the WWE - no one worked the crowd on the mic as Rock did.

You know I disagree here. I actually find the women matches more interesting now. They are usually more innovative than anything the guys do. Also, the eye candy now seems more athletic than the old days.
