Well it wasn't greed or anything thats done it, the police got wary of the big crowd outside the ground and just let everyone in all at once ticket or not.

Its worth pointing out that the season before Hillsborough had successfully hosted the FA Cup semi (possibly involving Liverpool, i dont remember). But that year they had an experienced officer in charge who knew what he was doing. They set up cordons half a mile from the ground with police officers checking tickets, so fans without tickets hoping to sneek in couldn't even get close to the ground. They had stewards stood in the tunnel behind the goal directing fans into the side pens.
For the disaster year the guy who had been in charge before either retired or went to do something else and a guy named Duckenfield was put in charge of policing Hillsborough. He was an experienced officer but he had NO experience in policing football matches or large events. They didn't have the successful cordon set up, so huge crowds of fans managed to gather outside the turnstiles, causing a crush. To avoid a crush outside Duckenfield ordered that a gate be opened and fans be allowed to just walk into the ground, with or without tickets. This, along with the lack of stewards directing people was what caused the crush in the Leppings Lane end. This was when Duckenfield panicked and froze. He didn't act quick enough to allow ambulances in and then blamed the Liverpool fans for being drunk. He never faced charges, pretty sure he was given early retirement and then died. |

Actually, checking my facts there since that was all written from memory. He was tried in a private prosecution but the trial was abandoned on the grounds of ill health.

Really horrifying. As somebody who sees sports as the ultimate recreation and gets pumped everytime I go to a game, I can't imagine going to a game, expecting to have a good time...and then suddenly feeling the pressure of everybody behind me and before I know it I'm struggling for my life.

The old stadiums were old, cold, filthy places with a piss smell because the toilets weren't great as well. The potential was always there for danger whether like this or something else. From going to Sunderland's old ground, Roker Park, I remember some of the fun when goals were scored and you ended nowhere near where you had started. There's obviously a bit of a fine line between jubilation and despair at times.
I think because of Hillsborough, terraces are best left in the past and at present to other countries. It would just take another tragedy for the question 'Why terraces' to be brought up. Fans are treated like human beings now and we are a lot better off for it. |

Those are the particularly bad places for policing. Away fans are treated like shit in most parts of the country.

We get treated like human beings at Goodison
![]() I've seen some pretty disgusting fan behaviour go largely unpunished after games too, they tend to be given the benefit of the doubt so long as they don't get violent, home and away fans both. |

Having been to games from the early 1980's some of those grounds were death traps waiting to happen. Don't forget that this came shortly after the Valley Parade Disaster as well. The stadiums were badly maintained and badly policed. As someone pointed out the mindset of the police was 'hooliganism' at that period. The police approach was that if there was a problem then it was caused by hooliganism and the fans deserved it.
Ken Bates wanted to install an electric fence at Stamford Bridge back then, as well as moats etc. The Tories also wanted to introduce a football supporters ID card. The anger is because once again the Police have failed in their duties and yet no one has been held responsible - just as with the Stockwell shootings, and various other examples of police incompetence they are always protected. Not one person has been held responsible for their actions on that day. |

Was the crushing caused from people in the back continually pushing? That is so crazy that something like that could happen at a sporting event where all you want to do is enjoy the game.
