Wrestling was completely different back when Taker hit the stage, gimmicks like his weren't out of the ordinary. The gimmick stood the test of time for reasons of tradition and nostalgia mostly (not to mention that he can just pull it off).
I can't believe you're actually arguing with me about the Hurricane becoming the World Heavyweight Champion. |

Helms does have the talent and natural presence to be a top contender. I mean, there's nothing offensive about the guy. Some things to consider, though:
* He's 36 next year. Although his size and his generally youthful look hide this well, he's not exactly a "young gun." * At about the same year he turns 36, it will mark his 19th year as a professional wrestler. The experience is definitely a good thing, and he can definitely be considered a veteran; but injuries have taken their toll on Helms. While he has been smart about how he works (taking extra time off and doing backstage interviewing after his neck surgery), one must wonder just what sort of gas is left in the tank. Can he really mount the momentum needed to become a World Champion? It's obvious the WWE loves him. They don't put just anyone over The Rock, or give them a verbal rub from Ric Flair. They also signed him to a 5-year contract while he was Gregory Helms. That's a lot of security to throw at a guy in the world of professional wrestling. He and Chavo Guerrero are also the only wrestlers they got in the WCW buyout that have remained under contract to the WWE since 2001, as well. There is definitely a lot going for Helms, but there is also a lot working against him. If Finlay becomes a World Champion, for example, I will put Helms' chances as being higher. But I could see Helms getting an ECW Title run one day, and then becoming a non-wrestling character/road agent/trainer for the WWE. |

I am so sure that Helms will win the ECW title one day.

I'm curious as to how this stuff with Paul Burchill is going to go next week. The Hurricane's identity against Paul Burchill's spot on the ECW roster -- in Burchill's home country. Should be interesting. Their matches together are really good, as well.
I don't think it is quite the time to end this Hurricane stuff yet, so I'm hoping that 'Cane pins Burchill, which leads to Paul showing up on either RAW or SmackDown! (with Katie Lea, who is definitely talented enough to win one of the ladies' titles). My heart says SmackDown!, because Katie Lea working with girls like Mickie James, Natalya and Beth Phoenix is too much to pass up. Plus, heels are more needed on SmackDown!. A John Morrison vs. Paul Burchill feud would be very nice. |

If the WWE had been smart, they would have just let guys like Nunzio, Noble, Helms, Super Crazy, etc., etc. be in a "league of their own" and just have 4-5 star quality matches with one another. It's absolutely bat shit insane at how Helms has been pissed away by the WWE for over 5+ years. |

I'd argue the only reason WWE even bothered with a crusierweight division was because how popular and diverse it made WCW and ECW in wrestling viewers minds. For WCW before it went to shit, your guaranteed a nice fast pace match as a way to hype up the crowd and make them active for later in the show/main event time.
It gave WCW a nice variety that even ECW attempted and was popular while WWE would stick with mostly "hoss" style wrestlers or certain wrestlers to keep the crowd popular. Once WCW went under and Rey Mysterio moved to the main event, WWE basically stopped trying to bother with the division (same for Tag Team division as well). |

Now that smaller guys are meshing into the main event scene and other sections of the card, a Cruiserweight Division is nowhere near as appealing to me now as it used to be.
Carlito Chavo Guerrero Chris Jericho Christian CM Punk Cody Rhodes Curt Hawkins Dolph Ziggler Evan Bourne Jamie Noble Jimmy Wang Yang John Morrison Kofi Kingston Kung Fu Naki Primo R-Truth Rey Mysterio Santino Marella Shawn Michaels The Hurricane Yoshi Tatsu Zack Ryder All these men are under 230lbs. If this is where you decide to cut off the limit for cruiserweights, then you essentially have to move all these guys out of their current positions, and place them in the Cruiserweight Division. Otherwise, how else do you define a "cruiserweight?" This is why smaller guys haven't been taken as seriously over the years as they have been now. Some get saddled with being a "small guy" while others don't. It makes the Cruiserweight Title look like it's not worth going for, and that the guys who do waste their time with it aren't worth investing in. Fuck, I don't even think of Dolph Ziggler as being a cruiserweight -- but he is apparently only billed as being 221lbs. I'm going to have to listen to his entrance on SmackDown! this week. Never being associated with cruiserweight wrestling has definitely helped Ziggler develop his own image, and not that of a "small man wrestler." The same goes for guys like Zack Ryder and Yoshi Tatsu. Put the Cruiserweight Title on Shawn Michaels, Chris Jericho or CM Punk, and then we can talk. |
