Not saying I don't see the comparisons between RDR and GTA either. I just think they did a better job changing time periods and implementing new features than 'those other guys'.

Req, fast travel is great I use it a lot but you miss out on helping people to get honor and fame and random bunches of animals. Damned if ya do, damned if ya don't.
ECG - def get what you are saying, just a question. How different did you expect a huge sandbox game by Rockstar to be from GTA? Besides the obvious time setting. I agree it has an enormous amount of gameplay elements that are the same but I can't say I didn't expect them. |

At any point, you can stop doing main missions and go explore, encounter random content, do side missions (of which you'll usually have several going at a time), do gang hideouts, collect pieces for outfits, play minigames, or just wreak havoc if that's what does it for you. Even the main missions can still be done in whatever order you choose up to a certain point. I realize that's similar to GTA, but how can it get less formulaic for you?
Don't see how the series could get any less 'formulaic' than that. Going to go with BDC on this.. what is it that you want that would make it less formulaic? How do you feel it could be improved? Even the mission types were varied enough between assaulting forts, escorting people, having stagecoach chases, holding off trains with a gatlin gun.. etc.. that they never got 'tiring' or boring at all. |

Hell, the list of challenges alone is enough to give you a 'purpose' if you want a break from the rest. Free-roam challenges as well are RIDICULOUS. There are so many of them, I'll probably never even complete a third of them.

Yeah basically. GTA peaked with Vice City for me. San Andreas was pretty good too but after I mastered flying in it, I couldn't be bothered. The side stuff got a little ridiculous too, having to exercise and have a girlfriend and that. I was excited for this, but right when I'd expect to be getting more into this game I am starting to get a little bored of it instead. I'll definitely still finish it but I don't see it having much longevity. There's nothing occupying me aside from just doing the main missions.

So an improvement would be a model overhaul. This presentation and design, but with a different gameplay model, would probably make a brilliant game instead of just a fairly impressive, but limited, one. Other things that bother me about the game is the behaviour of the horses: there is a token nod to them being animals with minds of their own but not nearly substantial enough. These things should buck you off if you try to run them through cactuses or at buildings, they shouldn't be able to brake like cars. The main character controls much the same way as in GTA so he feels a little unresponsive and "super-imposed" on the environment rather than being an actual part of it, though I know this is a facet of it being a 3rd person game. It looks very untidy at times and really hasn't changed any over the years. I think 3rd person games work much better as in Uncharted and God of War, where the gameplay follows a fixed layout and they can get the angles right. |

No, ALL the missions are dull and formulaic. Exploring the world in this game gets old pretty fast, so the only thing keeping me playing it is going through the main storyline.

You do realize this is a sandbox type game, right? And like all sandbox games, its as fun as your imagination lets it be. Sure, you can do 'missions' and storyline stuff, but its the amount of freedom given to allow you to do so much other random shit.
Look at G's post earlier. There is no 'king of the hill' gametype, but you can damn sure have a king of the hill game if you and your buddies want. Its all about thinking beyond what the game tells you to do. |

"I'm not a game developer" is a terrible excuse.
You're not a politician, but you've sure got opinions on politics and how they should be doing things. So who cares if you're not a game developer? You're a GAMER (for the most part), and gamers should at least know what they like in games and how they think a game could be better. Honestly, if you didn't have fun defending a moving train from dozens of bad guys, or racing across the countryside in a wagon while groups of people chase you and shoot at you, or assaulting a fort... then well, I fear there is little hope for you and you should just quit playing the game all-together, as its fun is lost on you. |

God, I love the fan boy rage at ECG for stating that he thinks doing the same thing over and over is dull....
He never said it should have been X, or he expected X, just stated a fact that he find the missions lacking. I dont think he was even really "bashing the game". I agree, the Rockstar MO gets old quick, but I still like the games. |

There's no 'fan boy rage'. Nobody has really disagreed that the features are similar to GTA. I think it is just dumb that he complained that the game was just like its predecessor, and cited Fallout 3 as a game he could 'get into' that was better, when that game was a horrible copy of Oblivion in a different time period laid over an existing IP.

i wouldnt call Fallout 3 horrible. That game was pretty f'n terrific tbh, but i do see your point. Game play wise people expected Fallout 3 to have alot of similarities to Oblivion, just the same, people should expect RDR and GTA to have similar styles.
Lemme put it this way, im not gonna barge in and complain about Halo Reach being similar to Halo 3. I'll leave stupid posts like that to Fallen Angel. |

Also, a second thought: having a change of scenery over core game play mechanics isnt always a bad thing. I wasnt never a big fan of GTA, but with RDR, the climate change does it for me. Just the same, I have Oblivion about 10 hours worth of play and couldnt get into it, but with Fallout 3 i was hooked within 2 hours.

On another note... still wish hardcore didn't suck. Was really pumped for that when I saw it as a gametype, but it is pretty terrible. Weapons should do WAY more damage, or you should just have WAY less health. Would make it a much better gametype.
Edit: Am getting a lot better at regular gang matches. Yeah, I use normal targeting, but I am understanding more about 'how' to play this game in MP. Gotta be sneakier and can't just run around blasting people like crazy. Last edited by Requiem; 05-27-2010 at 06:51 PM. |

Also, do you only get XP for completing challenges in MP (not free-roam)? If so, that is kind of dumb. You should definitely get XP for killing people or capturing objectives.
