I wasn't being sarcastic, I find Tim Thomas to be absolutely loveable, in part because he's an angry fella

Like he's often just super pissed at himself when a goal goes in and he shows it, it's kinda funny and pretty entertaining. To boot he's a great goalie with a great story, he was drafted in 94 didn't make his NHL debut until 2002-2003 (where he played all of 4 games) and wasn't a starter until 2005-2006, now he's a vezina winner. A total out of nowhere success story, what's not to admire.

"I was playing for the Lakeland Jets and (former NHLer) Joe Murphy was skating with us while he was holding out with the Oilers," Thomas says. "He took a shot and it literally went right through my pad and out the backside."
Murphy would do more for the young goalie than give him a great story for beer-night. Thomas was a never-see-the-ice third stringer on that Lakeland junior team, so he started playing forward. But right after the Christmas break, the starting goalie missed his flight back from Alaska and the back-up got in a car accident. So Thomas took all the shots in practice. As he was skating off the ice, he heard Murphy say to the coach: "Why aren't you playing that guy?"
So he did. Every game for the rest of the year. That launched Thomas on a netminding odyssey that would take him to, in chronological order: Vermont (University), Helsinki, Birmingham (ECHL), Houston (IHL), Hamilton (AHL), Helsinki (again), Detroit (IHL), Sweden, back to Finland, Providence (AHL), Boston (cup of coffee), Providence, Helsinki (this is getting silly), Providence, and finally, at the age of 32, Boston…to stay.
"It never once crossed my mind to quit," Thomas says. "But at one point, I did make peace with the fact I'd be playing in Europe for the rest of my career."
He might have, except that when a bunch of other NHL goalies came over to Europe during the lockout, Thomas outplayed them all, and forced the Bruins to take another look. Three years later, they're still looking.

Even better story: when he played at Vermont, he once got so mad after being scored on, he picked up the puck and launched it at the scoreboard, shattering lights and causing a fireworks show reminiscent of Roy Hobbs last homerun in The Natural. And that was in practice.
"There were pieces of light falling over the ice," says St Louis, chuckling. "It was hilarious."
Just watch Thomas when he loses a shootout. He sprints off the ice like someone tossed a grenade in his net. Like they're going to send him back to Flint to sell apples.
Somewhat sadly, we're not seeing many of those Thomas tantrums anymore (Angry Tim is my favorite Tim). He just doesn't get scored on much. He was an All-Star last year and his .944 save percentage leads the NHL this season.
And yet, so typical of his Dangerfield existence, he was left off the All-Star ballot. There they go. Doubting Thomas. Again.
"I'm going to have to disappoint you and give you a 'No comment' on that one," he says. That's okay. Sometimes "No comment" says more than a dozen quoted paragraphs.
One time after let up a game winning goal to Mike Richards picked the puck out of the night threw it into the air and batted it away with his stick.

0 games for Chara...

Common sense tells you the hit was 100% revenge...but Chara's been clean for 13 years. If it were Matt Cooke that did this, you'd hang him out to dry because of his past history. Since Chara doesn't have that type of history, he shouldn't get a massive suspension, but he shouldn't have got a pass either.

Little side note...Colin Campbell's son Gregory plays for the Bruins.

I'm pretty sure Colin Campbell isn't allowed to make decisions when it comes to a team his son is on. Remember hearing about it on NHL Live like 2 years ago when his son was on the Panthers and something happened.


At any rate I think Chara should of gotten a few games even with 13 years without an incident.

Chara should have been a bit more aware seeing first hand how devastating those types of hits can be to a team with Marc Savard out for the year.

Can't completely blame him since Bruins-Canadians games tend to be more emotional and physical especially the past few years but at the same time, he can't just do reckless hits causing the team to lose him for a series of games due to a stupid mistake by him.

I'd agree with the no previous thing of this sort, but the fact remains, Chara knew what he was doing, knew where he was and most of all knows his hits send people flying.

Thats besides the fact, it was a borderline illegal hit.

Its alright to defend your team, but drawn the line somewhere man.

Look at the video, Spilly. Chara had his head up. He knew where he was. I'm not saying he intended to kill Pacioretti, but I do think he meant to put him into that divider. He doesn't even body him into the boards. It looks like he pushes him.

Even if he didn't see the divider, part of a player's job is to know his position on the ice. If the divider isn't there, the hit is still dirty because it's well after Pacioretti has gotten rid of the puck.

Even if Chara didn't have intent on the hit, it doesn't matter. If I have a gun and I'm waving it around and accidentally shoot someone, I'm fucked, whether I intended to or not. He should've got at least a few games suspension.

Hell, a TORONTO fan is voicing opinion against Chara for a hit on a Montreal player.

Just because its a player on a team I root for doesnt matter, hell if it was Kessel I would say the same thing.

fact of the matter is, the kid is what 20-21 years old and may not play hockey again. Chara knows full well the severity of hits like that, as he fucking witnessed one when Savard was laid out.

Only thing I ever said about the Cooke hit on Savard is that it was legal at the time. It was still a cheap hit and I'm glad it's now against the rules.

I didn't say it was clean i said it was legal

I'm not condoning it, but I think it's a bad example because technically it wasn't an illegal hit at the time, it was a kind of hit that Scott Stevens built a career on.

But now thankfully the NHL had said enough is enough (though they really haven't) and deemed it an illegal hit from here on out and to that I say great.

So basically I condemn the Cooke hit while at the same time support the NHL decision at the time to not suspend him.


With this Chara hit though it was already an illegal hit, Chara had no business making that hit and to boot from replays it certainly looks liked he purposely gave Pacioretty an extra shove that caused him to go right into that turnbuckle.

I wonder if people accusing Chara of doing this on purpose are taking into account the physics, timing, and execution such a ‘perfect’ plan would require. But a conspiracy theory makes for better reading than bad luck.

And Spilchuk, when's the last time you've played hockey? I can tell you that the way they were going, it didn't take a "master plan" to get Pacioretty like this. They were side by side, near the glass, and Chara is so fucking huge. Pushing someone out of balance on skates is very easy, and at the speed they were going, of course it wasn't going to end well. That's the thing you don't seem to understand. OF COURSE it's not talked about if the glass isn't there. But Chara saw an opportunity to get even and took it. Pacioretty hit him after the overtime goal in January, Chara didn't like it. He tried to get his hands on him in February, couldn't. Now he had his opportunity, and took it. That's it.

It wasn't a huge conspiracy by Chara to deliberately get Pacioretty near the glass and then behead him, we get that. They just happened to be there, he saw his chance to get even, he made the cheap push to get him in the glass, the consequences were much worse than he anticipated, but he still did it. The video replays, the pictures, they all clearly show the push.

Hell, it's like that time Kostopoulos checked Van Ryn from behind and nearly killed him. Kostopoulos didn't mean to injure him, and it wouldn't have been talked about if Van Ryn didn't turn around at the last second. Kostopoulos could have braked, but he still went ahead with the hit, with the consequences we know. Kostopoulos was suspended. That's it. No conspiracy, but he still chose to take the opportunity to hit when he could have passed.

That's nice because I think the exact same thing about you. Talking hockey with most people sucks because it's guys like you who scream murder when your team gets beaten, but become overprotective any time it's implied that one of your precious players did something dickish. Nobody will think less of you because a player on your favorite team did something cheap. I know you're knowledgeable about hockey, which is why I think it's insane to see you protect Chara like that just because he's a Bruins.

The hit on Pacioretty was bad. The hit on Savard was also bad. I'm sure someone on the Habs probably did something cheap in the last few year as well. Hell, we had Lapierre on the roster for a bit, so it probably happened.

Just watch the replay again and see for yourself. Yes, he pushed him. That's not even questionable. I know he didn't want to break is neck. Nobody plays hockey to injure someone, at least I like to think so. But it still happened.
