As far as explanations, Superman's godlike abilities, Batman's problem solving mind and tenacious abilities, Xavier's resource management skills and godlike mind powers, Spiderman's mind, strength and webbing (all good when we want the bad guy captured) and Wolverine's rage-fueled path of destruction (before Magneto sucked him dry).

Mr. Fantastic

In the leader role, I'd have Reed Richards. Arguably the smartest man in the Marvel universe and probably the DC Universe too, the man can pretty much invent something for any occasion. If brute force won't get the Infinity Gauntlet off of Darkseid, Richards will likely find a way using science. On top of that, he has a lot of experience fighting intergalactic threats such as Galactus, and his leadership skills have been perfected over the years of leading Marvel's First Family since the very beginning.

His powers won't help too much against the more bigger threats, but could easily help with the Foot, and ultimately it's his mind which is more of a threat to his enemies than his actual powers.

Cyclops

Pretty surprised nobody else has gone with Cyclops. If Reed Richards is the brains of this team, Scott Summer definitely serves in the 'field commander' role. His powers may not be as exciting or extravagant as others, but the man has unparalleled leadership skills and knowledge of battle strategies and tactics. He has fought and helped defeat some pretty heavy hitters, including Apocalypse, Onslaught, Dark Phoenix and Magneto, and has proven time and time again that he's not afraid to sacrifice himself if he has to.

One of the more noble and honorable heroes in the Marvel Universe, Cyclops has a strong sense of ethics that will make sure his team stay pure and do the right thing. His Optic Blasts may not be on the same level as Darkseid's Omega Beams, but he can still do incredible amounts of damage if he chooses to really cut loose, and will be a great addition if some firepower is needed for a long-distance attack.

Superman

Really doesn't need an explanation. Narc said it best, that it would be pretty irresponsible not to have Superman. Pretty much invincible, Superman is the true heavy hitter any team needs, and he could probably beat this entire threat by himself to be honest, so long as they don't have any Kryptonite.

Thor

Another powerhouse for the team, Thor is the freakin' God of Thunder and should have a place on any team. Possessing beyond-human strength, there are few heroes in the Marvel Universe who can go toe-to-toe with someone like the Hulk, but Thor is one of them. Thor can use his hammer, Mjolnir, to pretty much do anything. Long-distance attacks and close combat is no problem, he can conjure up storms and some pretty fucking powerful blasts.

Like Superman, Thor has superhuman stamina and endurance, and can fight for months at a time without rest, if he has to. He may sometimes be brash and arrogant and feel his priorities lie with business in Asgard, but if the chips are down Thor wil rise to the occasion and do what needs to be done.

In addition, Thor isn't afraid to kill if he has to, so if it came to that, Thor can be relied upon to not shy away from getting blood on his hands. And in an absolute emergency, if the team need the ultimate destructive force to get the job done, Thor can always rely on his combat skills and strength whilst giving Mjolnir to Superman, so he can fuck shit up.

Spider-Man

And the final member of my team would be Spider-Man, arguably one of the most well-rounded heroes for any team. With super-strength, speed, agility and reflexes, it's his Spider-Sense which will likely be the best asset to this team, warning them of any approaching danger, and possibly helping him if he had to go one-on-one with Darkseid (hell, he's survived one-on-one encounters with the Hulk).

He can easily be called upon for any stealth missions, and his webbing will come in handy for many cases, most notably if prisoners are needed. He has scientific skills pretty near to the level of Reed Richards, so he will be a huge help in that department if he has to be, and (maybe I'm stretching here), but his constant banter has always helped him distract or agitate foes, causing them to make mistakes.

Spider-Man may not be the ideal choice for intergalactic threats, but his pure will-power and never-say-die attitude, along with his strong morals, has helped him single-handedly defeat some of the most beloved (or hated) villains in comics, including Dr. Octopus, Green Goblin, Venom, Carnage and Morlun, and he survived the entire Clone Saga and managed to come out of it relatively sane, proving this is someone who can be trusted with the safety of the planet.

Well, it's not like Superman doesn't know how to fight Kryptonite-wielding villains too. I mean, one of his biggest recurring enemies is Metallo, who's usually all about shooting Kryptonite laser beams and stuff. It'd definitely make the fight an awful lot harder, but Kal wouldn't immediately be boned just because the bad guys have a chunk of K with them.

EDIT: And on top of that, Kryptonite really isn't all it's cracked up to be. Supes has muscled through K-poisoning countless times. He's been shot with K-bullets, stabbed with K-blades, blasted with K-lasers--hell, at one point he was strapped to a Kryptonite chair and had a nuke dropped on his head--and still came back for more. And that's after being de-powered Post-Crisis. You're much better off using magic or screwing with his powers via red-sun radiation than relying on Kryptonite to take him out.

Lex Luthor

Lex Luthor is the perfect man to bring together a squad of unstable egomaniacs/villains with the power to stop Darkseid. Of course, he'll be planning all along to get the power for himself.

He is rational enough to carry out this task without playing his hand too soon. He is one of the smartest men in either world. He has abundant technology and resources at his command.


2:

Ra's Al Ghul

Lex reaches out to Ra's, knowing he must get a hold of things on Earth first. He knows he can't trust Ra's, and Ra's will be making his own move for power eventually...

But in the meantime, Ra's brings with him another vast empire, master strategic planning... and a League of Assassins that is more than capable of taking care of The Foot Clan.


3:

The Abomination (Emil Blonsky)

Pure raw strength, with a military background. He should be fairly easy to manipulate for Lex and Ra's, but both think him not a threat to their own powers of mind and resources.

They convince him to join and throw him at Darkseid. He probably can't beat Darkseid, but could be a heck of a distraction.

The Enchantress

A magic user who seems somewhat more stable than other choices. By hook or by crook, she is on the team. Indispensable source of power, mobility, and magic knowledge. Could help deal with both Unicron and the Gauntlet.

Before getting her to the team, Lex will have to figure some way to disable her quickly, should she choose to stand in the way of him grabbing the power.

The Cyborg Superman (Hank Henshaw)

Ok, ok, fine. I still got a Superman on the team. Sue me. Thing is, on top of most of Superman's powers, The Cyborg also has complete mastery over any machinery he interfaces with. Have Enchantress drop him into Unicron, and bam, that is it.

Also, Henshaw will most likely be easily bartered with. All he wants is for his existence to end, which Lex could make happen if he got The Gauntlet.



Of course, let us assume that once they do the work of wresting the Gauntlet from Darkseid, the heroes are immediately returned, and defeat the new team of villains before anything could be done.

By all accounts, Vril Dox is a manipulative douchebag. However, he does have the security of the universe in mind. Of course, if he has to do something deplorable to ensure the safety of the masses, by all means he will do it.

He is a super genius of the highest caliber. If anyone can devise a strategy to defeat Darkseid, it is him.

Nova (Dick Rider)

I debated whether to put a Green Lantern on the team, but in the end, decided to go with Nova. Darkseid knows Green Lanterns. He knows what to expect. Nova would be something else. Plus, if he has the entire Nova Force inside him, he is pretty powerful.

Nova also has experience fighting in long drawn out wars (Annihilation), so he would be slightly more experienced if things got a bit drawn out and extended. All the wars the Green Lanterns have fought have been pretty quick ones.

Oh yeah, and he obviously was not on Earth at the time of destruction.

Captain Comet (Adam Blake)

Technically an Earthman, but has not lived on Earth in a very long time. Still would probably not like hearing the fate of his old home. Or that the universe is at risk.

He has a plethora of powers, especially if you take his older self (I used a picture of his younger self because he looks cooler). A mutant, he has unusually high IQ, telepathy, telekenetic abilities, sometimes some sort of clairvoyant sight, oh yeah, and the standard flight, strength, and invulnerability.

Gladiator (Kallark)

This one kind of explains itself. Pretty much all the powers of Superman. Hinged on his confidence in himself. So, as long as Vril Dox can keep him confident, he is pretty much a no brainer to have on the team.

Orion

In hindsight, I am really surprised that no one has picked Orion. Darkseid's son. One of the only beings in the universe who can, and has, stood toe to toe with Darkseid on more than one occasion. In fact, he even killed him once.

Add that to the psychological factor of a father vs son battle. Darkseid might get so wrapped up in this personal combat, that he leaves himself open.

Well, they're both these ancient beings with godlike powers that put even the best superheros to the test.

According to Wiki, Kal, Darkseid is basically a god while Apocalypse has forced people to worship him as one.

Dunno...always felt like Apocalypse was Marvel's answer to Darkseid. Reading the wikis does not alleviate me of that idea.

Darkseid is more of a counterpart to Thanos than he would be to Apocalypse. Personality-wise they're similar, but power-wise, Darkseid is one of the most powerful beings in the entire DCU.

And Apocalypse usually keeps getting beat (and reborn) by X-Men who aren't really on pair with cosmic-level powers. Apocalypse is powerful but Darkseid/Thanos are way more powerful.

I'd say a good DC counterpart for Apocalypse in terms of power would be somebody like Mongul. Someone who's still big and powerful enough for the heavy-hitters of the DCU to really struggle with in order to defeat, but nowhere near the reality-sundering level of Darkseid (well, pre-reboot Darkseid. So far New 52 'seid is fucking embarassing)


Anyway, getting back to the topic at hand. I skipped a round, so let me do the all-villains team first:

#1/Team Leader:

Doctor Doom

Much like Superman on the heroes' team, there really isn't any viable excuse for Doom not to be there. He's extremely powerful with both technological and magical arsenals, a genius intellect to rival the greatest minds in either universe, and most importantly when facing such apocalyptic odds, a total god-complex that means he will never stop fighting to prove his superiority. And like Supes, he is pretty much the standard-bearer when it comes to supervillainy.

Black Adam

The heavy hitter of the team, Adam's got all the strength and speed of Superman, with none of the easily exploited weaknesses like Kryptonite or red sun (or magic, since he's magically powered), and has absolutely zero problem with using lethal force. I imagine he and Doom would get along swimmingly.


#3/Heavy Support:

Magneto

The Master of Magnetism is a no-brainer for taking on a gigantic metallic creation like Unicron. And while Unicron may be too big for Erik to simply crumple up the whole thing, if they come at it with a plan (assuming they watch the heroes try first and fail), he can cripple enough critical areas to take it down.

Sinestro

Like Black Adam, Sinestro has the god-like abilities of one of the Justice League's top-tier heroes, but turned on its head, and with zero problems about using it to slaughter his enemies. Creative use of the fear ring could seriously turn the tide of the battle, and Sinestro's can be pretty inventive with that thing.


#5/Tech Monkey/Strategist:

Doctor Octopus

Now I know he's not as almighty powerful as a lot of the other guys, but Doc Ock has always been a surprisingly tough combatant (motherfucker knocked out the Hulk once, and beat Iron Man so badly it made Tony hit the bottle again) and a super-genius who's managed to outwit Hank Pym, Tony Stark, and even Reed Richards. Hell, in the current "Ends of the Earth" arc, he and the Sinister Six have taken out the Avengers and are pretty well poised to take over the world. He'd definitely be the guy to go to for a master plan and to come up with some crazy-ass weapons to take on the cosmic threat. And he could probably rip the Foot apart like tissue paper.







And for the No-Earth-Based-Heroes Team, assuming I can't re-use Nova:

Orion

Yes, he looks silly. But seriously, if there's one guy in the universe who has a better track record against Darkseid than Superman, it's Orion. This guy has dedicated pretty much his entire life to overthrowing his father, and will do absogoddamnlutely anything in order to defeat him. And it doesn't hurt that he's incredibly powerful and loaded up with sweet New Genesis technology.

Silver Surfer

Even with the Infinity Gems, the Power Cosmic ain't nothing to fuck with. Norrin Radd's basically an extreme-sports enthusiast version of Doctor Manhattan, so he could dish out some serious punishment to the bad guys.

Gladiator

When it comes to physical powers, it's hard to go wrong with the I-want-to-be-Superman-too power set.

Mogo

I'll see your Unicron and raise you the Green Lantern Corps' equivalent to the Death Star, a sentient ring-wielding planet.

Adam Strange

Again, like Ock, Strange wouldn't necessarily be much good in a front-line fight, but he knows the far reaches of space like the back of his hand, and is pretty brilliant when it comes to strategy and resourcefulness like an outer-space Batman. Plus, if the battle goes sour, he could Zeta Beam the team out to the far side of the universe and regroup for a later counterattack.

I'd put in the leader position only because the real leader would make him think he is. He's fairly easy to manipulate, although majorly unstable. He would go all out as a distraction while doing some legit damage to... everything. I'm betting Unicron or Darkseid would humble him when it gets to that point, but we have a team here.

Sinestro



Here's the team leader. He's led Green Lanterns, and his own corps. He's on Hal Jordan levels of power, and he's already proved to be pretty good at raising hell on complicated intelligent levels.

Bane



The Foot are handled.

Brainiac



He would love to sample whatever secrets Unicron holds within him. And technologically speaking, he's the best counter. He could summon his skull ship for space battle, but the real battle wages with the 1s and 0s. Assimilation of data begins.

Black Adam



In need of another heavy hitter, Black Adam will rise to the challenge. There will need to be some double teaming with the final battle begins.

Infection upon death, bodily fluid exchange, bite or scratch. Even Superman can contract via fluids.

Who are your go to guys?

I want to do this in the vein that the Marvel Zombie Apocalypse wasn't canon in the least. So, Wolverine wouldn't be able to turn into a zombie even through dying.

My team:

1. Wolverine
Assuming that his immunity could be used to possibly cure the world, I think it'd be a good idea to have the guy around. Would also be great for rescue missions.
2. Iron Man
Tony's suit is pretty much impregnable and his vast resources and brilliant mind would both come in handy in the clean-up/cure effort.
3. War Machine
It's all about the suit. Would be great to have him as back-up for Wolverine during the previously mentioned rescue missions.
4. Bruce Wayne
Resources and brilliant mind to figure out the source of the plague.
5. Lex Luthor
Resources and brilliant mind to figure out the source of the plague.

Iron Man
Like DttS said, it's gonna be damn hard getting into that suit. Tony can do a lot of the traditional superhero damage-control without having to worry too much about getting touched.

Martian Manhunter
Can be intangible pretty much as long as he damn well pleases, and has plenty of front-line superpowers to remain effective. I was going to go with Shadowcat for intagibility, but J'onn's arsenal of psychic and physical powers gives him a huge edge over Kitty.

The Atom
Lock him in an underground bunker somewhere and let the good Dr. Palmer get a good look at the plague on a molecular level, and he'll get right to work on a cure. Plus, it's going to be next to impossible to scratch or bite the guy when he's so small you can't even see him.

Red Tornado
Wind powers make him great for non-lethal crowd control (assuming the zombies can be turned back to normal and they don't want a massacre on their hands). Also, he's a robot, so the plague wouldn't affect him.

Vision
Can be intangible, has a boat-load of useful powers, and is a robot. Even if the rest of the team fails, Vision was practically built for this exact scenario and could see it to the end.
