Ortiz is too good for this league. Needs his own league. Him and Pujols.

lol Ortiz vs. Pujols. Come on
34 points of OBP 48 points of SLG Ortiz is not the best hitter or best DH in the AL anyway so I´m not sure why he´s being brought up in the first place Last edited by The Miz; 08-05-2006 at 12:17 PM. |

![]() Nah really, its weird when you look at Ortiz, he was pretty normal until he came to the Sox and boom, he's the 'best hitter' around, don't get me wrong i'd definitely take him as a DH but i dunno, Pujols is ridiculously brilliant |

Yeah doubling his home run total as well as adding like 40 pounds in bulk was pretty amazing

Pujols is the best player, period, though. ARod, Hafner, Ortiz--all good, but Pujols is truly in a league of his own

I made the post a few weeks ago, but I will reiterate it now. David Ortiz AND Jim Thome do not deserve to be the MVP this season, again, and the reasoning is Justin Morneau. Please take the time to look at the following stats, which are more noteworthy now than they used to be.
Justin Morneau: BA: 324 (6) RBI: 94 (2) HR: 28 (8) OPS: .977 (8) David Ortiz: AVG: 289 (35) RBI: 107 (1) HR: 29 (1) OPS: 1.021 (4) Jim Thome: AVG: 294 (30) RBI: 83 (8) HR: 33 (2) OPS: 1.039 (3) So as you can see, these three players are about equal in terms of the major statistics that they would be judged on. All three are on teams that are currently contending for the playoffs, and only one of these players plays in the field. It looks like the Blue Jays have fallen off now, which basically says good-bye to Vernon Wells, so I think that the AL MVP should be decided by something other than power numbers or given to a pitcher. God knows that Justin Morneau is not an MVP candidate, so why should two designated hitters with similar stats on equal teams? |

Lol, just settled on the Toronto and White Sox game on WGN, the first thing I hear:
"Like I predicted before the season, all five of these starters could have as many as 15 wins" These announcers are so awful to begin with, and now they are lowering the standards. At least Glaus just jacked a big one to deep center, shutting up the announcers for a second. The Jays have a chance to be a spoiler to as many as four teams, yet they choose this time to start falling off. |

OK so since Morneau is 8th in OPS and Ortiz and Thome are 3rd and 4th that means they ¨don´t deserve the MVP because of Morneau¨? I don´t get that logic, I agree Morneau is incredibly overlooked by the media, moreso than Travis Hafner, but those guys have better (not by a wide margin) stats and at this point anyway are more deserving of the MVP.

I don't think OPS and HR's should be the deciding factor in an MVP race. If somebody on a lesser offense drives in more runs while hitting less home runs and a lower OPS, he is the more valuable player. Morneau is having a great year, but like the Miz said when I posted this the first time, I don't think he is the most valuable player in the league. I am indifferent if Ortiz's numbers are warranting of an MVP consideration at this point, but I do think that he does more to win games for the Red Sox than Thome does for the White Sox. He drives in more runs for a lesser offense, statistically. I just don't think home runs and OPS should be a reason to win MVP when you have the second best offense in the majors, meat. |

I think when Figgins hit one of his like 2 career home runs, and Hudler said ¨Get Figgy With It!¨, that was probably the closest The Miz ever came to suicide.

OK, honestly now, I know people will hate me for this, but why not Jeter for MVP? Sure, he is overrated, but he is also hitting .352 with 67 RBI, 74 runs, 24 stolen bases, .426 OBP, and is one of the better defensive players at his position. His stats, for a No. 2 hitter, are pretty good, yes, but that's not all.
Think about the Yankees. They have absolutely no right to be where they are right now. Throw the payroll out the window, because some of the highest paid players are not playing. Gary Sheffield has been their best player for the past two seasons, OUT. Hideki Matsui has been as consistant of a 5-hitter as you can get, OUT. Johnny Damon was out for a big chunk of the year, Robinson Cano has been on the DL, and Whateverthehellhisnameis Wang is their No. 2 pitcher. Then, Alex Rodriguez has been merely average this season, as has Damon, Posada, Williams, hell, everybody but maybe Giambi's power numbers. You can't say he doesn't deserve it because the front office made bad moves. You can't say he doesn't deserve it because his teammates are injured or not performing either. That is because through all of this, through how shitty the Yankees are, or should be, they are leading their division and Jeter has been great. I don't honestly think he will get it, or even get serious consideration for it, but right now his team team is statistically worse than the Red Sox and the White Sox, yet they are above them in the standings. |

Jeter is having his best year since 1999 no doubt, mvp? no, but tbh i couldn't say who is right now.
I think the thing with us is when guys like ARod and Giambi are in a slump, another couple of guys will jump in and produce, Jorge Posada or Bernie Williams say. We have so many guys that can produce that even when our top run producers are out, we find a way to win. Even friggin Miguel Cairo will come through when the going gets tough. |

RBI is a baaaaaaaaad stat. I agree that for an award like MVP, you can´t just look at the guy with the highest OPS and give it to him. Gotta be the guy who would make the biggest difference in a playoff team making it or not. I don´t agree with the DH bias because not playing defense is not that big a deal to me.
I wouldn´t vote for Jeter because I think Giambi has been more important to the Yankees |

For a guy hitting .250 Giambi has been phenomenal this year.
tbh i;d love to see Vernon Wells get AL mvp, but that obviously won't happen. Morneau plays in Minnesota, that automatically dismisses him. Hafner won't get it because Cleveland have sucked so much. It's gonna be between Ortiz and Thome unfortunately, Derek Jeter is 2nd in the order there's no way he'll win it, and Giambi is Giambi, nuf said. |

I think a lot of it will have to do with who makes the playoffs, or in Vernon Wells case, if his team is at least close to contending, he might have a shot.

I don't think the MVP should be based on his team period. If you are one of the best players in the league, you should be eligible for MVP, even if the rest of your team sucks balls.

Well if Ortiz's team sucked balls he wouldn't have 107 RBI or whatever he has, and that is the biggest thing he has going for him.

I wouldn't say Pujols is a lock to win...Beltran's making a serious run at it. Still think it goes to Pujols though, cause
A) Without Pujols the Cards wouldn't survive, and B) Beltran can't hit a lick at his own home stadium it seems |
