Sexy Lexy (Lex Luger)

We all know the story.

Hulk Hogan leaves the WWF in 1993, the company is now left without a top level face with the look Vince likes. Vince decides to tweak Hogan's "American hero" gimmick and gives it to Lex Luger, then a heel known as the narcissist.

Luger gets the "Lex Express" a bus tour which goes cross country to build support for his upcoming match at Summerslam against Yokozuna.

Summerslam comes and Luger wins the match....by countout and Yoko keeps the title. Luger earns another title match after winning the Royal Rumble along with Bret Hart but loses again to Yokozuna at Wrestlemania, apparently as a punishment after he blabs to folks outside of the company that he is going to get the title at Wrestlemania.

I've often wondered if the WWF screwed it up at Summerslam. Ending a PPV main event on a COUNT OUT of all things is kind of a dick move in the first place, but it totally killed the momentum Luger had at the time.

Of course Luger didn't have the charisma Hogan had, but the monster push got the fans interested and they were wanting someone to take out Yokozuna.

The company apparently held off the title change to keep the feud going longer and allow Luger to build more momentum, but it failed.

You might recall Hulk Hogan's original push didn't last long, they got the title on him fast and Hulkamania was born. With Luger they decided to wait and that may have been a mistake. If the WWF had allowed Luger to win the title at Wrestlemania and put him in a strong feud after (perhaps with Bret Hart), he might have gained some momentum and become a credible main event player for some time to come. He was a multi time WCW world champion, he had experience being at the top.

Did it fail because the company screwed it up in the first place or did it fail because Luger shot himself in the foot before Wrestlemania?
Or perhaps, did it fail because Lex Luger is not Hulk Hogan?
