NBA takes away Sura's triple-double By PAUL NEWBERRY, AP Sports Writer April 13, 2004 ATLANTA (AP) -- The NBA took away Bob Sura's third straight triple-double Tuesday, ruling he shouldn't get credit for one rebound because he intentionally missed a shot just before the buzzer. Sura thought he was the first NBA player since Grant Hill in 1997 to have three straight games with double figures in scoring, rebounding and assists. But the NBA said his tactics in Monday night's 129-107 win over New Jersey violated the rule that states, ``A field goal attempt is a player's attempt to shoot the ball into the basket for a field goal.'' Since Sura wasn't trying to make the shot, the NBA said, he shouldn't get credit for a field goal attempted. Therefore, there was no rebound. The journeyman guard had 22 points and 11 assists when he intentionally missed a layup just before the buzzer so he could get his 10th rebound. ``Actually, the ball slipped,'' Sura said, laughing and not making any pretense at being serious. ``All the guys on the team were screaming at me to do it. It was kind of a reaction thing. I just did it.'' His intentional miss rekindled memories of Ricky Davis' blatant attempt to pad his stats last season. Davis, then with Cleveland, was roundly criticized when he tried to finish off his first career triple-double by shooting at the wrong basket, missing and getting the rebound. Before it could happen, a Utah player wrapped his arms around Davis and was called for a foul. Davis was fined by the Cavaliers, and the league pointed out a rule barring players from trying to score for the other team. At least Sura was shooting at his own basket when he missed, but the NBA said it didn't matter. Sura picked up the first triple-double of his eight-year career on Friday, when he put up 12 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds at Chicago. The following night, he had 15 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds against Boston.

Noone cared about it. The Nets didnt care about it, in fact Jefferson said if they got something good out of it then to go for it. Kidd said he didnt care as well.

p.s.while we're talking about rules, why is it, a 17 year old can go to the NBA but one has to be three years removed from high school to play in the NFL??

In my mind I see football being a lot more physical sport which takes a lot GREATER toll on your body and whatnot. In basketball if you are really good ala Lebron, KG, or Kobe I dont see a problem with going straight pro because the skills are there and you are going to be better than all of the guys in college pretty much

Football is a different story. IMHO I think if a high school senior went straight to the pros it would be a grim mistake.

Now if you are talking about just going from being a freshman/sophmore/whatever to pros then I dunno. My personal opinion is I think they should stay in college untill they are a junior, but if they are just plain out NASTY then I wouldnt care seeing them go earlier.

Well I would still want to see them stay longer but you get the jist of what Im saying.

I haven't seen it, but from what I heard it was move obvious then Strahorn sacking Brett Favre. If that's the case and it was very obvious, then I say good for the NBA, let's start bitchslapping these little brats, and remind them what the game is about. Teamwork and winning, not faking a stat that no one will care about.

He claimed it slipped but everyones pretty sure of themselves that he meant to do it.

I just see it as the NBA being lame. Brats? ROFL

He obviously showed teamwork getting 11 dimes.

I think they should just let it go without being all anal about it. I see it as him and the Hawks getting a little confidence going into next year, which they obviously need.

Well yeah krispy, thats pretty obvious. But how many 58 year olds are there in the league? And how many 20-30 year old beasts that would more than likely KILL the majority of those guys?

I dunno, like I said I think it would be in the athletes best interest to stay in college, get as good as he can and as beefed up as he can and then go

If he is at that point, then I see no point in staying but not many guys are at that point ya know?

Also I predict that football will be just like basketball before long, high school seniors going pro. Except the football players wont be doing shit unlike Bron, KG, Kobe, and Maine.

I dunno, but one question would be, does he have an incentive clause? dunno, that might have factored in.

I think your right about high school seniors in the NFL, but I think it will happen once of twice, and the kids will get so messed up it will never happen again. The courts have cleared the way for high school seniors to go to the NFL, the NFL is fighting it. Football is much different then basketball in the physical, and I know kids are lifting weights at a younger age and all, but I think unless there is maybe a rare freak of nature an 18 or 19yr old would get killed, mentall and physically in the NFL.

The Sura thing, ehh, dunno. He was going to be the first person to have three straight triple doubles since Grant Hill did it in 97, think that was the main reason his whole team was encouraging him to do it

Meh, it's not like a huge deal but I thought it was kind of a lame move like I said.
