Would Kane have made it to the level he did without the Kane character?

Was thinking that Kane had been in the WWF for a few years before the Kane gimmick started. He was always a solid worker, but do you think that, without the rub he got from working with Taker and being a huge part of Taker's mythos he would have gotten to the point he did?

I'm thinking he would have had more "big man" gimmicks, maybe a body guard gimmick at some point, then retired to be a trainer or road agent or retire from the business as a whole.

Do you think he would have gotten as over as he did? And how would you have seen Glenn Jacob's career going without the Kane character?

This is an excellent question, one that I have a hard time answering..... I don't think he would have made it to the level he was at, and I find it difficult to think what The Attitude Era would be like without the Kane character..... his feud with Undertaker/Austin, as well as Vince/Austin & DX/Nation, really summed up 1998

So long story short, I don't think a monster heel (the character I'm sure he would have been stuck with) could have gotten over in that time frame..... I can see Vince putting him with The Truth Commission, and once they disbanded I could see him continuing a partnership with Kurrgan until The Oddities were formed

The Kane character gave him the longevity. At the same time it's impossible to know how things would have turned out if he would have been given another gimmick. Maybe he would have had even greater success in another gimmick. He had the tools to be a superstar on his own. I will say this - for every Undertaker, Kevin Nash, and Scott Hall there are about 100 other Isaac Yankem gimmicks, big men who can work but go nowhere because they end up in a dead end gimmick.

To the level he's at now? Yea, probably.

To the level the Kane character was at it's height? It could have happened but I don't think it would have.

Very good question. Judging by the fact that WWE struggled to find anything for him creatively by coming up with the Isaac Yankem DDS, and Fake Diesel Gimmicks, I am leaning towards the WWE writers most likely not being able to utilize him properly. Kane has been a very good worker throughout his career, but I think that any big man who could work and was put in the big red machine gimmick would have reached the same level of success as Kane did at his peak. Without the Kane gimmick, Glenn Jacobs probably would have gotten the old creative has nothing for you treatment, and would have certainly been future endeavored.

A lot of the characters succes IMO is due to the man portarying Kane as well een without the mask when his Character became more of a giant psychopath

Jacobs vocal inflections and facials all contributed to putting Kane across as a terrifying badass and if and if anyone is thinking "well shaving your eyebrows off makes you look creepy anyway" I give you Christopher Daniels who despite shaving his eyebrows and wearing eye makeup is by and large unintimidating.

I hear what your saying, but, check this out.. It's like when Hollywood producers are casting for a particular roll.. You don't cast somebody with supermodel looks to play a dark evil nasty looking villain. You have a general idea of what look you want to cast, and you select from a pool of candidates that have that look.

WWE could have easily applied that same principal to the Kane character. I contend that any big guy who can go, who was ugly enough, and had the capability of frowning, tilting his head to the side, and walking around like a scary bastard, could have just as successfully portrayed the Kane character as Glenn Jacobs has..

I always found one thing funny about Kane's career.

It's always funny when people associate Katie Vick immmeditaly with Kane, when it was HHH who did primarily all of the bad things in that angle

That might be one HHH's greatest accomplishments to somehow erase his involvement from people's mind with that fiasco.

While the sketch itself was Hunter, the back story was true and is (from what I hear) covered in the Kane book.

You know, people keep saying Kane is a good worker, and at this point in his career, he definitely is. However, when Kane FIRST debuted, I was never impressed by his matches. I think he got much better over time while he was in the Kane gimmick, but it was definitely the gimmick that sparked the still-burning fire that is his career.

This is exactly what I thought.

Kane isn't really at any 'level' now. He's a big name used to fill up space on the card if they wanna put someone over, without making a big name star look bad.

Laugh all you will, 'RAMMSTEINMAD' and in return I will laugh at the fact that you are, seemingly a huge fan of Rammstein.

Seriously, Kane's gonna do one more biggg thing before he retires.. I hope

It's hard to say. I think the bigger question is whether or not the Kane character would have gotten over as well as it did without Glenn Jacobs? WWE has done everything they can to kill this character, but he keeps making it work somehow. Let's chronicle the destruction of the Kane character:

- He's a disfigured, mute monster who is horrifically burned over his entire body!
- Oh, well maybe only about 80% burns.
- Also, he can talk, but he needs a voice box.
- Actually, screw the voice box. He can say a word or two.
- Hell, have him cut a full promo.
- Burns weren't as bad as we thought. Put him in a mesh tank top.
- That mask he's wearing? The iconic one that's been the key to his gimmick for years? Let's have that removed on a non-hyped match on RAW sometime. But at least let's put some make up on him to make him ugly.
- Nobody brought the make up tonight? I don't know, just put a hand towel on his head.
- ...screw it, just do what you want

Then of course add him fighting some weird, alternate-earth Kane and never explaining why. To survive that pussification of your monster character and still a mid-high tier guy? Epic.

Yes, he will job to the next rising star.

Who will then go on to job to Triple H.

Circle of life man.

P.S. I'm not really into Rammstein that much, but name has stuck with me for ten years now.

At first I was thinking "No, the gimmick has defined Kane's career," but then I thought a little more about things. Kane is a guy with just an amazing attitude towards the business. He doesn't have an ego about things, and he's always willing to put guys over. For a man his size, he would have been able to keep getting work and such, and dare I say it -- in a hypothetical universe Glen Jacobs could have been an even BIGGER success without the Kane gimmick.

While Kane gave him something very important and high profile to do instantly, over time I feel that while it has given him longetivity and some measure of credibility, in a sense -- it has also put him in the shadow of The Undertaker, as well as other stand-alone main event guys. If Jacobs was his own dude, then he might have amounted to more eventually, even if it had taken longer to get there.

That would require a good character, good booking and a developing career otherwise, though. It's quite possible that Jacobs would have never amounted to anything too noteworthy because there was nothing else for him, and his ring work (while good for a man his size) has never really been a big attraction for him.

Wasn't Matt Morgan being considered for a gimmick where he would be a third brother to The Undertaker and Kane? Let's say that he had gotten that. He instantly would have been a big part of WWE programming, would have probably been pushed to the moon, won a World Title or two, and then might have dropped down in status but been kept on the roster just floating around like Kane currently does. But what we got what Matt Morgan in a stupid stuttering gimmick, him being released, and only now finding focus in TNA to the point where he could eventually leave, return to the WWE, and be a slightly big deal there.

My heart still wants to see another Kane World Title reign. When The Undertaker eventually retires, I think Kane will be bumped up the card for a little bit (until it is his time to go), and be "the monster" of the WWE. I don't see him winning a Royal Rumble or anything, but I could see a mid-year/end of year push for the Big Red Machine. Lately, his ring work has been the best it has ever been, and he's been getting more and more of a "respect pop" instead of just a "we know you" pop.

I think it just shows how good The Undertaker has been. He has a character based off of him and it has worked for about 13 years.
