Q/A: Film/Game Rentals by Mail

Yeah, I know. Should be two seperate threads for this, too bad. :foc:

Here's my problem. The Blockbuster video I do/did my business has closed up due to bankruptcy. Got all my games and movies there and it was in walking distance. Perfect. Now it's gone, and I'm not driving 2 towns over just to rent. I got a couple redbox machines in town but they don't cough up blu-ray, "off the radar" films, and not enough TV.

So, my fellow TPWWers, I turn to you for help.

Netflix pretty much runs the show in terms of movie rentals. Hell, along with Redbox, they pretty much ended the reign on Blockbuster and Hollywood video. I did a little research and they got about 100 distribution centers and you get your movies in 1 business day. This true? Also, how's the selection? Can you get blu-ray, foreign, TV, and limited screened movies, too?

Now I know there's Gamefly. Judging from what I've read off here, it's first come, first serve when it comes to new releases. And since they only got 4 distribution centers in the country, it's gonna take a little longer to get games. I also notice that the prices tend to change by the month. Once commercial starts a $9.99 a month, next month its $8.99, then back to $9.99 the next. I'm wondering if it's worth it just to sign up, but I gotta wait awhile for the game I want on my list arrives like a month after release.

Alright. So who subscribes to what? How's your service and experience? Should I go to *insert company name/website here*?

Any help would be much appreciated.

So this is like the game trader's flea market........to a degree. Can you get rid of other items like PC game and game guides? I know Gamestop and amazon.com don't let that fly.

The changing GameFly prices are just specials, check to see what it will be after the first month or so just to be sure. They have fewer distribution centers, but it's not all that bad. I get my game from PA to here in VA in a day or 2, occasionally 3. As far as new releases, it really just depends. Big name games you should be fine on, but smaller name games that get popular you'll get fucked. I've been waiting over a month now to get Metro 2033.

Netflix is almost perfect. Usually only takes 1 business day for movies, both ways. Their selection is great, though they get new releases after a month due to some deal the studios have with places like Blockbuster. And yes, they have plenty of blu-ray, foreign, TV and other such things

Don't forget Netflix has over 1000 movies and TV shows (probably around 5000 now) to watch instantly thru your PC, Xbox360, PS3, and even the Wii.

Yeah, but unlike the disc. How long does that stay on the console. Do you have a time limit you got to watch before it dissapears or something like On Demand? Or do you just download and delete whenever?

Im grandfathered into Blockbuster Onlines $19.99 plan since Ive been a customer since 2005, which is 3 out at a time with no upcharge for Bluray, plus free instore returns of the mailed movies for free rentals plus 2 coupons a month that are still good for a free week game rental or movie rental. The same plan now is like $30 a month and doesn't include the game option on the free rental coupons. I havent used the coupons on games in a year or so since Ive pretty much quit gaming, but it was a nice feature to have.

One negative is that Blockbuster has closed all but one store in the area and Im affraid that the one that is open might go bye bye too, which would prevent me from making instore returns for rentals, but it would still be worth the $20 to me.

Blockbuster was trialing game rentals by mail but with all their financial problems I doubt that will ever happen nationally. In fact Im worried that Blockbuster will go away and I'll end up paying more through netflix for less service (since Im not gonna stream movies due to my potential 5GB cap on my internet) and they upcharge on Bluray which is the only thing I watch.

I had netflix for a few years and really liked it. It's a great way to find older and more obscure movies. There were very very few times they didn't have a movie I was looking for, and in those cases the movies were extremely obscure and I completely understood. The streaming option is amazing now and just continues to improve. There is an extra fee if you want Blu Rays as well, depending on your package. But for me it just got to the point where I felt forced to watch movies to get them back. Just download most stuff now I guess, and my friend lets me use his Netflix stream. Still recommend it if you think its for you. Def will find some amazing movies with it.

As for Gamefly, I had that for 3 months. The first game came and it worked well, sent that back and it took forever to get my next game. Sent that back and again it took forever. I ended up cancelling it. I found the service to be too slow for my needs. Obvi other people use it and like it, but for me it was not worth it. I now use Goozex for my gaming needs. And while the wait at times may not be perfect, I have had nothing but success with it.

I recommend Netflix. I have the option that allows you to rent two movies at once, but I use the service much more frequently to stream through my 360. They have a great selection of television shows, movies (as PG said, obscure ones), and documentaries if you're into that.

The service is great and in my opinion, well worth it.

Netflix is amazing. The streaming quality is great, and the turn around time on getting dvds is great. They do rent blurays, but it costs more a month.

I personally love Gamefly too. I've had no problems with it, and I've had it for a couple of years.

I have had both Netflix and Gamefly so this is my opinion on both of them...

Netflix--- I have had for probably 4 years now and still love it as much as the first day I got it. You can usually get what movie you want right away and If I send a movie back on Tuesday I usually got a new one back on Thursday. They are pretty quick. And now that they have the ondemand thing its much better. Im always watching movies on my xbox just because I like the interface better than that on the Wii and PS3. Also dont have to put a disc in each time I want to watch something.

Gamefly--- The price point for their plans is alright but the only reason I didnt keep it was because it took nearly 2 weeks at the time to get a new game back and it just wasnt worth it for me. And alot of the time you couldnt get the game you wanted because tons of other people were playing it.

If anyone is interested in trying Netflix out, I got a promotional email where I can offer a free month to friends/family. All I have to do is forward you the email, you follow the appropriate link, and sign up. I assume you will need some form of debit/credit card to sign up, but worst case, you can probably cancel if you're not satisfied before they automatically bill you.

Anyone who is interested send me a PM. I think I have some promotional cards they sent me in the mail. I'm not sure how they work but I'll check them out if I get interest from more than one person.

In fact Im worried that Blockbuster will go away and I'll end up paying more through netflix for less service (since Im not gonna stream movies due to my potential 5GB cap on my internet) and they upcharge on Bluray which is the only thing I watch.

dunno how you got away with that. when we had it a few years back, every time they raised the prices, we got a letter stating they were doing it and our price was going up. first they took away the free game rental, they they jacked up the price twice before we ended up canceling.
