From Wrestling to Sports Entertainment

From Wikipedia:

On January 18, 1971, Sammartino lost the championship at Madison Square Garden to Ivan Koloff. The crowd was so stunned into silence that Sammartino thought his hearing had been damaged. After the pin, Koloff slowly walked across the ring while the ref raised his hand three times. The announcer came into the ring with the belt but, fearful of a riot, did not present it to Koloff. Koloff left the ring while Sammartino stayed inside to keep the crowd's attention off Koloff. As Sammartino left the ring, people started crying. Sammartino has said that the crowd's reaction disturbed him while he sat in the dressing room after the match.

How times have changed

I've followed pro wrestling consistently since 1988. I've seen a lot of good things and a lot of bad things. I also use the internet to watch a lot of classic matches, in which I show a lot of appreciation for.

I prefer Wrestling over Sports Entertainment any day.

Wrestling in 1988 was still sports entertainment, only better sports entertainment. 'Wrestling' from that Buddy Rogers-type era died out for a reason, mainly because for the most part it was boring as fuck.

Meh 1988 the WWF wasn't THAT great. The workrate was usually not the best since guys were usually wrestlig like 2 matches a night every night, methinks. Could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that's the case. Also since everyone was high on coke, it effected things.

Do people over in Japan still sit silently during matches? That weirded me out the couple of times I saw it.

Yes, the Japanese crowds are very quiet. Every once in a while, they would react to a big move, victory, or even a clean break.

Yeah, Bruno losing was a moment that both he and Ivan have described as eerie.

The guy is still the best.
