I played the demo on 1 and it was amusing but I don't see what the hype is about. But 2 looks fun.

Basically, it's no longer limited to platforming. You can now make racing games, puzzle games, old arcade-style games (space invaders, etc), program your enemies with more AI, completely change the control scheme for a particular level (actually mapping buttons out), record your own music and sound effects, make your own cut scenes, map levels to each other (to make it easier to set up a whole "game"), different camera angles (including an overhead one), new items like grappling hooks and gravity/wind effects, AND all old levels and DLC carry over to the new LittleBigPlanet.

Shit that used to be really complex and complicated has been simplified and made easier to implement--i.e., the old "calculator program" that somebody took a whole level to make before is now a programmable chip. Reportedly some of the staff has gone so far as to make Command & Conquer style games with LBP2, and the trailer shows something that looks similar to Pikmin (with a line of smaller Sackboys following the main character).

Like, when they initially announced a second one, I was fucking furious because anything new to add could easily be DLC. There's been alot of major developments--the paintball guns, actual water--that weren't implemented until much much much much later in LittleBigPlanet's history. Once I found out just HOW FUCKING MUCH new shit is going to be in the sequel, though, I promptly shut the fuck up. If they added ALL of this shit as DLC to the first one, it would end up costing me way more than a standalone game would.
