Top 10 Sequels That Aren't As Bad As Everyone Says
by the Angry Video Game (Movie) Nerd
I agree with a lot of them. I also agree with just about every word he says about #1 on his list. |

A lot of his complaints seem to relate to the idea that people don't like "leave your brain at the door movies anymore. There seems to be a negative connotation to those movies that were popular in the 80s and 90's.
I haven't seen all of the movies on this list to comment on all of them. Hell I didn't even know there was a Psycho II. Seems pretty shady they waited til' Hitchcock was dead to make the sequel though. |

Cool video. I love this guy by the way. He's great. I also agree with a lot of them. You know, I've see that Halloween movie every year just flipping around, but I've never actually watched it nor knew Mike Myers was not in it. It looks like the type of horror movie I would enjoy though.
Also, I'm like the only person I know that likes Temple of Doom the best. |

Glad to see I'm not the only one that felt the same about #3 I actually though it was better than the 2nd film which I always felt was a tad overrated if I wanted to watch something realistic i'd go for Nolan's Batman.

I actually enjoyed TMNT III immensely and I'm not ashamed to admit that. I thought it was cool to see the guys in feudal Japan or whatever it was, even if the plot left somewhat to be desired. Highly underrated movie, IMHO.

Agreed with a lot, disagreed with a lot as well.
I actually liked Terminator 3. It was not nearly as good as 1 or 2, but I enjoyed it. I remember growing up always thinking that Terminator 2 did not make sense. Technically, if Judgment Day was eliminated..then how would Connors ever meet Kyle Reese? how would he send him back? I always thought Judgment Day would still happen. I also enjoyed Indiana Jones. I was bothered by it just like everyone else too tho. I was not bothered by crap like the fridge and the "trans-dimensional beings". I was bothered by the cheesy crap like the monkey scene. I guess I agree with his comment about thinking for yourself. Going into a movie expecting everything to be realistic is silly to an extent. I guess if people want realism they should stick to neo-realist film? |

Look at the treatment Bond and Batman have gotten in recent years. They're approached fresh with a more grounded take on the mythology, and have been tremendously successful.
They are also just flat out fantastic movies, which is the main reason they are so successful, but realistic is in. People want Bourne-esque action heros, not swashbucklers from serials, or the shoot em up Arnies of the 80s. I think a large part of the Indiana Jones backlash was that it didn't match rose-colored nostalgia glasses expectations, and "failed" by being too akin to the originals, if that's even possible. It wasn't as good as Raiders or Crusade, no doubt, but it was mainly blasted for elements that have been commonplace in the series since day one. |

People may want realistic heroes right now, but that's hardly a permanent thing. The movies of the early and mid 70s were filled with gritty, flawed heroes as well (Dirty Harry f'rinstance) before the cultural zeitgeist switched gears to prefer the likes of Luke Skywalker and Indiana Jones. So the film not being grounded in realism IMO isn't a point against the quality of the movie itself, but rather just a case of it being out of synch with what the audience expects at the time. I'm sure that when moviegoers are in the mood for romanticized swashbuckling flicks again, there'll be a little more appreciation for Indy 4.
(Not to say I liked everything about it; there were certainly several moments that went from "so ridiculous it's awesome" to "so ridiculous it's stupid") I think the main reason people (myself included) don't like the alien/extradimensional being is because it breaks one of the cardinal rules of adventure films: don't mix fantasy mysticism with sci-fi futurism. Suspension of disbelief usually only goes so far as to allow one way for a franchise to 'break the rules' of reality, not both. The only franchise I've seen successfully blend both together is the Star Wars series, and I contend that that's only because they introduced both right off the bat in the first movie (and why it pissed so many people off that they decided to add a non-mystical explanation for the Force in EpI). As for Spider-Man 3, there were a couple of really great scenes in it, particularly the big fight with Sandman and the rescue scene with Gwen Stacy. My biggest problem was just how badly many of the characters were written, especially Mary Jane and Harry Osborn, and the completely unnecessary retcon of having Flint Marko be the one who killed Uncle Ben. Retcons never sit well with fans, at least not without it being a complete reboot (and even then, it's iffy). It's easily the weakest of the three movies, and the movies themselves are nowhere near the best take on the Spidey franchise (that honor IMO goes to the recent Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon), but it's hardly the worst superhero movie I've ever seen. |

Good list and agree with all of them, except for Psycho II, never seen it.
For the record I love Spider-Man 3, fuck the critics that film rules. And I enjoyed Indiana Jones too, though I haven't seen it since the cinema, but it was fun. |

I thought the reason everyone hated Indy 4 was Shia LeBeouf being in it?
Also, I think a lot more people would have liked Halloween 3 if it had been seperate from the Halloween series. It was a pretty fucking creepy movie. And if it had been made seperate, then its doubtful that they would have felt the need to make a 4th Halloween movie on such ridiculous pretenses. |

I don't know..I always felt like Spider-Man 3 was a disaster.
I think Nowhere Man nailed it pretty well. Bad writing. I felt the movie tried to do very much in such little time. Venom was unnecessary..so instead, we end up with some scrawny shit version of Venom, time that could have been used to flesh out the other characters, etc. |

I didn't like Spiderman 3. I just can't get around that. When I first saw it I enjoyed it a bit more, but I definitely think it was a mess.
For me the problem was the overall movie, and the pacing/amount of things in there. There were a number of great scenes and sequences. Even most of the elements in the movie were okay with me, but they were all jammed into a movie where they didn't all fit, and as result many of them were rushed and under-realized. There are several parts of that movie I think are great (everything with Sandman in action), while there are others I think are awful (everything with Sandman's story). I think they mave have been warranted in supplementing the Sandman character with a second villain. If the film was just Spidey battling with Sandman (while dealing with the black suit), it probably would have worked well. Adding in the Harry Osborn payoff, or Venom would have probably helped. But both? That's where the problem is. There was one too many conflicts. Not to mention Harry made three turns during the movie as well. |

I see what he's saying about Terminator 3. I'm not sure where I stand on it. It can be viewed as awful and decent, depending on how you look at it.
As a Terminator movie, judged to the standards set forth in the first two, it's awful. Those two films are so great, and Terminator 3 comes along and just isn't on par. I don't think it's unfair to judge it against them since it is ultimately cashing in off that mythology and exists within that story with those characters. So in that respect, I think the movie sucks and I feel all criticisms. At the same time, it's also just an action movie that is meant to be entertaining. Everyone knew from the outset that Cameron wasn't returning, and probably should have expected the difference. If you were to take away the Terminator name and expectations, it is a very entertaining and fun action movie in the spirit of 80s action flicks. It's probably one of the better Arnold flicks if you can get past that. Ultimately, it is a good time and that's better than trying to mimic Cameron and failing (see Salvation). So I applaud that, in a way. |

Quote:
Spiderman 3: Sandman and Parker's discovery/problems with the black suit. Parker defeats Sandman, hits rock bottom and gets rid of the suit and Brock gets it at the end of the film. The first half of the Harry Osborn payoff. The initial attack and the amnesia. By the end of the film he comes to. Spiderman 4: Venom and the rest of the Harry Osborn payoff. Basically Venom and Osborn fucking with Parkers life at the same time. Perhaps Spiderman can't beat Venom alone and he reconciles with Osborn in a similar, less rushed fashion. The End. Or maybe not. Maybe then the franchise wouldn't be in much despair and they actually would have reached 6 films by bringing in Lizard, Black Cat, Carnage, etc. The whole Spiderman 3 thing spurs a lot of discussion and revisionist planning. |

Ghostbusters 2 isn't and never was going to be the first film. Storywise and structurally, it's largely a rehash. He's right about it being extremely safe.
But people claiming it sucks is straight bullshit. It is hilarious. They are comedy movies, are they not? The characters and humor delivers. I don't think they should have neccessarily taken the story to deeper places or darker themes like an Empire Strikes Back or Dark Knight. That's not what Ghostbusters is. Plus the story is interesting enough. The first half where we see them down and out, and going back in business is the best stuff. The river of slime and New Years doomsday stuff is more than acceptable. The overall concept might be the same as the original movie's conflict, but the details are fresh, rich and interesting. A lot of BTTF3 haters just don't get it. It's a Doc Brown love story. Enough said. |

I like Gremlins 2. I don't watch it as a sequel to Gremlins though. I watch it as its own movie where a large conglomerate has gremlins in the system and it just so happens their gremlins are the Gremlins from the first movie. I love that it is self-aware to the point of the gremlins infecting the movie reel. It's not a completely different direction from the first. The Gremlins get bigger and badder and the setting is different. I think maybe people didn't like the change in tone but I think it's good.

It definitely exchanges the dark comedy meets Kapra style from the first movie. In exchange it's self-satirical and intentionally ridiculous to the point of being like a live action cartoon.
I prefer the first, but it's definitely interesting. It was probably smarter to mock the idea of a Gremlins sequel than to try to duplicate the first. Plus, as a kid, the movie was really satisfying. I was a mark for the Gremlins mythos and it just gave more of it. More Gremlins and Gizmo kicking ass a la Rambo. I haven't seen it in years though. I'd like to watch it soon |

I would be more comfortable giving that distinction to the second one than the third, which was pretty atrocious.
The second was pretty disappointing. Probably even bad, but it wasn't near as bad as the third. |

I don't really want to make a new thread so I will talk about it hear. This is from wikipedia about ID4:
The possibility of a sequel had long been discussed,[78] and Devlin once stated the world's reaction to the September 11th attacks influenced him to strongly consider making a sequel to the film.[79][80] Devlin began writing an outline for a script with Emmerich,[81] but in May 2004, Emmerich said he and Devlin had attempted to "figure out a way how to continue the story", but that this ultimately did not work, and the pair abandoned the idea.[82] In October 2009, Emmerich said he once again had plans for a sequel,[83] and has since considered the idea of making two sequels to form a trilogy.[84][85] How would they even get two more movies out of those? We know how to destroy the alien ships. |

I had read more recent news about those. I believe a couple weeks ago I read that Will Smith had signed on and they were good to go. I didn't see anything about Goldblum. He better be back.
I will bet anything Will Smith's character is President. |

I thought about this. It doesn't make sense. Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum fly into space using a ship that crash landed in the 1950's. The aliens use the same model in 1996. Clearly rolling out new ship lines isn't a priority for them. Though I guess in all the time they've been conquering planets nobody thought to shoot a missile into the blue light so maybe it is time for an upgrade.

Out of everything in Independence Day the thing that always bothered me the most is that Aliens don't recongize the old ship.
You are this master race that can create spaceships that are the size of New York, but you can't tell the difference between a ship from the 50's and ships you are currently using? Like C'mon |

I loved this movie as a kid, but watching it yesterday I'm not sure how it made so much money. I guess the Will Smith summer blockbuster factor + the White House exploding and throw in the guy from Jurassic Park, but it has aged in a more "it's so bad it's good" than "it's good" way. Lots of the explosions look like they are something you would see in a direct-to-DVD now. Not the movie's fault, but it's noticeable now.
Also how the hell did the people with spears take down the ship? |

They had a really big spear?
Right when the ship goes down. Does everyone know for sure that all the Aliens die? Why are they standing 500 feet from the spacship? Shouldn't you be worried about a ground invasion now? Also I got this observation from TPWW(and it might have been from you, Thedamndest) Why does everyone refuse to believe that Dennis Quaid got abducted by Aliens? There are fuckin Aliens in your atmosphere and they just destroyed approximately 65% of the Earth. Are you people that fuckin dense? |
