Were the New Age Outlaws actually good?
Pre-TNA I mean, I know they were terrible there. I just remember that they had a great entrance, I always though Billy Gunn liked dudes and I think I enjoyed a match or two of theirs when they were faces.
Were they actually good though? Billy Gunn was horrible alone. I recall the same about Jesse James. Make your case for or against. It's time to make TPWW MEAT again! Quote:

as a child I enjoyed them as part of DX. Match quality wasn't something I looked for as a kid and I have not gone back and revisited any old DX/NAOL stuff since.
But from a child's perspective I thought they had a great gimmick and I never remember not liking them in the ring. So at very least they weren't boring. |

Billy Gunn was a great athlete with little charisma and no mic skills. Road Dogg was all mic skills and charisma and did little in the ring. They were the perfect tandem.

I enjoyed them a lot when I was younger, and the crowd reaction they got was really good. Doubt it would fly nowadays though, with the current product, but that's to be expected.

Once they became members of DX they were great because it gave them something more to add to their gimmick.

As a youngster, I loved them when they first debuted and they were all throwing people into dumpsters and tossing them off the stage.
Then they joined DX and I was like "Yeah! Perfect fit for those two ruffians!" I continued to enjoy them for a period. |

They're definitely one of those tag teams that you just cant break up because the sum is greater than the parts. The Dudleyz are another example of this. Maybe Too Cool as well.

Couldn't have phrased it better. Even when it was time for HHH to start his single's career, the first guy to get kicked out of DX was Billy Gunn. After that stage they were never as big as before, and the Billy-Chuck angle was only a pawn in the bigger Bischoff-Stephanie angle.

They were mega-over and were a huge draw for the WWF during its peak years. So, yes.

They were great. They were and are a classic tag team, in an era where the business was at it's most popular and competitive.
I think they would have been even better if there was another tag team near their level for them to have a rivalry with. LOD was their first big fued and that helped get them over, but LOD was on the decline and didn't even have a year left. The E&C, Dudleys, Hardy boys era didn't start until after the Outlaws had disbanded. |

I was and always will be a fan of their work..... they were just two guys thrown together to make a tag team, and it worked.....I enjoyed there matches more than The Hardys & Dudleys and are definately Top 10 of all-time

The NAO were pretty terrible. But the Attitude Era was exciting enough that even the most mediocre wrestlers seemed decent. Hell, even X-Pac outpopped DX.

Yeah they were great. I really couldn't care less about match quality. As long as it's entertaining I'm happy, and they were that.

They were in the right place at the right time in the right stable. I remember loving a dumpster match of theirs with Funk and Foley

Before they joined DX I never thought much of them but they improved but they were later split up then they went to TNA and they sucked harsh and Ron Killings didn't help much at all either.

So that match was like Nov. '97 sometime? It looks like they hadn't changed the logo yet. This is always a point of confusion for me because I wasn't really following the WWF at the time. Anyway, yeah they were good back then and full of energy. Maybe not the fastest guys on the planet, but at least there was some intensity behind their wrestling. In TNA, they were almost ten years older and the intensity just wasn't there. Of course it's hard to create intense and memorable matches in that blasted impact zone. Ugh...I wish they had the cash to get the heck out of there.

The New Age Outlaws are one of the best teams in history in my opinion. They combined two styles where Billy Gunn could carry the matches while Road Dogg carried the mic work. They had some decent matches and they definitely have a legacy. They ran the tag division until Edge and Christian, The Hardy Boyz, and The Dudley Boyz and others started making marks.
Sidenote: Does anyone know if they're included on the tag team DVD they recently came out with? |

I think the only thing I disliked about their matches was that they became pretty formulaic.
Road Dogg would get the hot-tag and land some punches, a little while later Road Dogg would be beaten up on and evetually get the hot-tag to Billy who would clear house and win the match. |

I think the Outlaws, as a team, were excellent.
I'd go into why, but it's pretty much been covered. I still love the night the "Outlaw Rule" was born. Brilliant. lol |
