Were PC Gamers Too Good For Microsoft's Cross-Platform Gaming Project?

Rahul Sood, Voodoo PC founder and current CTO of gaming at HP, spins an interesting yarn about an aborted Microsoft project that would've let PC and Xbox gamers face-off. The only problem? During testing, the PC gamers cleaned Xboxers' clocks.
In the middle of a rumination on the lukewarm state of PC gaming, Sood divulges some details of a project Microsoft was working on "many many months ago" to let PC and Xbox users face off in games like Gears of War and Unreal Tournament, an effort that would've effectively bridged the gap between Xbox Live and Windows Live.
Sadly for the project, the fight wasn't exactly a fair one:
I've heard from reliable sources that during the development they brought together the best console gamers to play mediocre PC gamers at the same game... and guess what happened? They pitted console gamers with their "console" controller, against PC gamers with their keyboard and mouse.
The console players got destroyed every time. So much so that it would be embarrassing to the XBOX team in general had Microsoft launched this initiative.
That's not entirely surprising to anyone who's fragged on both platforms—Matt Buchanan says "i'd slaughter anybody using a controller if i had a keyboard and mouse"—but it's interesting nevertheless to hear just how thoroughly the Xbox gamers supposedly got their asses whooped. Shadowrun for 360 was, I believe.

Anyways, it's not skill. It's like having access to a better controller. Mouse and keyboard just make it easier to aim.

Could be accurate. A mouse/keyboard combo can lead to quick responses (aiming in FPS, macros) than any controller at the moment. Still though, i'd rather not pay a thousand dollars every year or two to upgrade in order to play a game. I'll stick to consoles.

Not even true. My computer is going on 6 years old and can still play most games that came out recently. The whole two year upgrade thing is bull, if you buy the right stuff you are good for way longer then that.

I put a friend of mine on TF2 on the PC with a 360 controller who played a ton of Halo and Modern Warfare, and he did amazingly well with the Sniper class. If you put him in front of a keyboard and mouse, he basically just got really frustrated and had to go back to a controller.

Mind you, Sniper is probably the easiest thing to play with a controller, but there are people in the world that are just as used to a controller as most of us are to keyboard and mouse.

I have a 5 year old PC that can run Crysis on high. The only upgrade it got was an extra 2GB of RAM a year after I bought it, and it can still play most newer games on a combination of medium/high settings. I used some existing parts and some new ones when I built it and it only cost $450-500 including the cost of a 22" monitor. (after RAM)

Don't see how it is so hard to believe that an old PC is capable of running modern games. Oh, I forgot... You've built computers for your friends so that makes you an expert.

I wouldn't doubt an older PC might be capable of running some modern games especially if when built they bought the best of the best at the time but I do think that even in that case they'd probably stuggle to run them anywhere outside of the minimum settings.

My own PC is now about 5 years old, last year it had it's first significant upgrade because I could only play new releases on the lowest graphics settings. I ended up adding another 2 gig of Ram, replacing the graphics card and overclocking the processor. Now it's capable of running anything new on the maximum settings but it took quite an expensive upgrade to do it.
