So I Met Ted DiBiase

Sr.

I just thought I'd tell you guys about it. It was the first time I've actually met a wrestler face to face and actually spoken to them. This post is pretty big, bigger than I thought it would be so I apologise for that.

He came to my hometown yesterday for an appearance at a local indy show. Sunny was supposed to be there too but she bailed because apparently her boyfriend is an MMA fighter and he injured his back and she was taking care of him.

But before the event, I went to an Autograph/Q&A Session. I met DiBiase, shook his hand and asked him how he was finding Dundee. He said he was enjoying himself and that this was his second time back to the area. I got his autograph and thanked him for coming and I shook his hand again before I left.

I looked at my autograph and he signed his name and everything, but next to the Dollar Sign, he wrote "Matt 16:26", so knowing he's a preacher, I looked up Matthew 16:26 and got....

It was pretty cool, though I did have to pay £10 for the autograph. Then the photo opportunity came and that was £10 also, so I had to run to a bank machine to get cash but when I got back, all photo's had been taken.

Then came the Q&A Session which I did find pretty interesting.

He spoke about his sons, MMA, what Vince looks for in a wrestler/Orton, Flair, Warrior, Luna's passing, The Chris Benoit Saga, The Attitude Era, The Wellness Policy and people using the wrestling business as a stepping stone for movies.

I'll give you all the gist of what he said about all those in the Spoiler Tags so I don't stretch the page even more.

His sons
SPOILER: show
He said he was really proud of his sons but that his eldest son Michael, is a "lost soul". He spoke about how Ted Jr went to Indonesia after the 2004 Tsunami to help build houses and after Hurricane Wilma in 2005 he and some friends all went to help search for survivors. He then spoke about Jr's DUI and how it happened. He said Ted Jr. and a friend went to a bar after a show and had too much to drink. While driving home, DiBiase fell asleep at the wheel and crashed his car. Dibiase then called his mother from jail, crying and constantly apologising and when she told Ted Sr. that, he said "Good, he still has his soul". At the next WWE Event after that, he said Ted Jr. stood up in the locker room before the show and told everyone that he loves God and that he's going to change and not let anything like his drunken DUI happen again. He then aplogised to God.

MMA
SPOILER: show
Someone asked if he thought MMA was the WWE's biggest competition and DiBiase said no. He then said that he doesn't believe that everything in MMA is a shoot and that there has to be some part of it that is a work, it's just nobody has found out what it is yet.

What Vince looks for in a wrestler/Orton
SPOILER: show
DiBiase praised Orton very highly and even said he would like to have a match with him the most if he was still an active wrestler. He said that Orton is a great wrestler but his attitude out of the ring is what hindered him and stopped him being where John Cena is today as Cena is everything Vince looks for in a wrestler. He said Vince mostly looks for "character" in a wrestler and he doesn't really care about anything else, as long has they can have "character" and charisma, then Vince will like them. DiBiase then said a few years ago he took Orton to the side one night and told him to basically start behaving himself.

Flair
SPOILER: show
He didn't really say much about Flair but what I found interesting was that he said he watched The Wrestler and thought it was a good film, but it doesn't portray the wrestling business correctly. It only portrays what the wrestling business would be like if you fall on bad times. He then said that these days, he can associate the story of The Wrestler to Ric Flair. He said Ric has fallen on some tough times and that he's spending more money than he makes and that he's on his fourth marriage now.

Warrior
SPOILER: show
Someone mentioned Warrior and DiBiase shook his head and said Warrior was an idiot. He also said he was crazy for changing his name. He said Warrior couldn't really wrestle and that if he spent half the time he used on making his body look good, on learning to wrestle, he would have been great. He then said that for the people that say Hogan can't wrestle, Hogan carried the match he had with Warrior at WrestleMania VI. After that, he said that Hogan is a smart man because of how he wrestled. (I'm guessing he meant by not have a varied moveset) He then said that the body is a wrestler's tools and you have to look after your tools because the longer the tools last, the longer you can use them and that Hogan did just that.

Luna's passing
SPOILER: show
He didn't say much on Luna but he did say she was a great friend of his and that he is friends with her uncle "Mad Dog" Vachon. He then said that Luna had some personal troubles and he said she was a "Troubled Soul".

The Chris Benoit Saga
SPOILER: show
After talking about Luna, he brought up Chris Benoit. He said the Chris Benoit thing was terrible and that he hated that everyone who had an axe to grind with Vince, The WWE and the wrestling industry all came out of the shadows and used that as there opportunity to get back at Vince, The WWE and the wrestling industry.

The Attitude Era
SPOILER: show
Ted said he hated The Attitude Era and is now very happy with the current PG Rating and that Ted Jr. is a part of it. He said he didn't like the thought of children growing up and seeing someone who drinks beer, swear and flip people off as a hero. He said he asked Stephanie one time during The Attitude Era "Do you want your kids to grow up idolising someone like that?" and he said that Stephanie said no. He then mentioned ECW and said that there was no storytelling in ECW, as wrestling is storytelling and that people got bored of ECW and said that once you've seen someone bleed because of a chair to the face or go through a table, then you've seen all those spots. He then gave an example. He pretended to be a fan at an ECW show and said "Yeah, another chairshot, now tell me a story!"

The Wellness Policy
SPOILER: show
Ted said the current Wellness Police is great and that it should have been like that when he was wrestling as back then, you were given a cup and told to go and pee in it sometime, but some people would cheat the system and get someone else who they knew was clean, to pee in it for them. He said some people even brought some pee with them from back home as they would ask friends back home to pee for them, but that now you're given a cup to pee in and told to pee while someone is watching you. He then said that the current way is so good and so strict, that that's one of the reasons some people are jumping over to TNA, just so they can wrestle and also smoke their drugs and so on without serious consequences.

People using the wrestling buisness as a stepping stone for movies
SPOILER: show
Someone asked how he felt about wrestlers being in movies and Ted said he doesn't have a problem with it. He then said Ted Jr. was in a movie and that the casting crew were amazed at how good he was at acting even though he's not had any acting classes. He said the WWE have their own movie division now and that he doesn't think any of the wrestlers who have been in movies have used the wrestling buinsess to get into the movie buisness but he does have a hunch about The Rock.

After the Q&A Session I went the the actual wrestling event which was alright though most of the roster were fat guys who hardly took any bumps and most of their moves were punches, kicks and holds. There was one or two guys who were really good. One of them being an Irish guy called "Bingo Ballance", he was the best guy at the event.

Though at the interval, I went to the men's room and on my way there, I saw DiBiase, signing autographs and taking pictures with people, all for free.

So I basically wasted £10 on something I could have gotten for free. I waited to get my picture taken with him but I never even got halfway up the line and he had to go because the interval was over.

Some of chants at the event were pretty funny though. There was a tag team called "The Flying Scotsmen" who looked exactly like The Hart Foundation, but fat. Even down to the Pink & Black attire. So during their match, a "Fat Foundation" chant started.

Then there was a bald guy who looked like an MMA fighter, he was pretty big and actually looked like he worked out. During his match, a Goldberg chant started after he kept doing hook kicks and spears. Then after that, someone shouted that he looked like Skip Sheffield which started an "NXT" Chant that actually made the two wrestlers stop and look over at the people who started the chant.

But overall it was good, though I got the feeling that DiBiase wasn't enjoying himself during the autograph session, but I don't really blame him.

Hopefully more people like Bingo Ballance will be there next time.

So has anyone got any thoughts on DiBiase's answers? Stories to share about meeting wrestlers or going to Indy shows?

I met Sr. in '98 when he came to my church.

Ever since he became a Christian, he has signed a Bible verse by his autograph. I believe the one he used to sign was Phil 4:13; must have changed it since then.

Real nice guy, and I can attest to him hating the Attitude Era, because he denounced it when he preached that night. (even though it wasn't near its peak)

I think he is off the mark on ECW but he comes from a much different background and probably hasn't watched much of it so I could see why he would think that.
